Any shot at all of pulling off my second PSA 10 for this card?

Well, guys, I know it probably won't happen, but what are my chances of pulling off my second PSA 10 1984 Donruss Mattingly RC? I pulled it off once about a year ago. This card is pretty slick. It's going to PSA tomorrow with about 45 other buddies. Here it is.

By the way, I don't know what that is on the upper right corner. It's not part of the card, I guess there was something on the scanner, so ignore that if you can. Believe me the corners are sharp.

What's going on with the upper right corner? Looks a bit dog-eared?

    Otherwise? Sweet card!

  • That card is gorgeous. You have quite the luck. Start cracking some 1985 Tiffany and then give me a call!

    Nice looking card.

You can never tell when trying for a 10 on a card like that, especially from a scan. If I HAD to guess Id say a very nice PSA 9 with the centering keeping it shy of the 10.

The centering strikes me as being off a bit. But, it's a nice card nonetheless!

Looks like a little extra stock on the top right corner, but I don't believe PSA will penalize you for that. I agree with bri that it's a high grade 9. The centering is not quite Gem Mint IMO, but I have seen PSA 10 cards with worse.

    Looks just a tad off t/b for a 10 but easily a 9.

I agree. They are tough on this card. With the top R corner and 60/40 centering, you're looking at a 9, methinks.

I can assure you guys that the upper right corner is the least of this cards worries. (As I said in my first post), I think that is a white speck from the scanner. The upper right corner is mint, so try to overlook what you see on that corner. I have to agree on the centering. That is my only concern. Someone tell me this - TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, does it qualify for a 10 on centering? I know that to GET a 10, the centering pretty much has to be perfect for this card.

    I have a 84 Donruss PSA 10:image

Centering in not perfect T/B. So you could get a 10.

Something just tells me that a Mattingly centered like that would not even get a 9.

Is there a purple print mark by the D in his first name or is this on the scanner? That would pry take it out of 10 territory.

  • With enough subs, it may come back a 10, but I don't see this one being a "no-brainer" 10.

Yes, it probably does qualify for a 10 but -- like I posted earlier -- PSA is notoriously tough on this particular card.

It is a print dot. I missed it. I won't get my hopes up. Oh, well - it's worth $5 to get it into a 9 holder.

<< <i>A PSA Gem Mint 10 card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse. >>

    On the centering...

It can be 60/40 and still get a 10.

A card can have a very slight print defect and still get a 10.

I am not happy. It got an 8. I will be resubmitting.

Now that you know the grade, you all probably think I'm a novice or something, but I tell you - I couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I'd gladly pay "8 money" for that card. image

  • Only an 8?! Well, that's PSA. They are tough. I submitted a sharp, well-centered N. Ryan 1984 Donruss with hopes of a 10 or at least a 9, came back an 8. Still don't really see anything much wrong with it.
