OT: But had to vent!!

I see on Yahoo a new story, "US and Iraq forces to launch sweep of Sadr City". Geez nothing like letting everyone know ahead of time so they can go hide somewhere else. Why don't they print these stories after we have already started the mission?? Am I missing something??

In all fairness to both political parties, I think the media wants the US to fail no matter who is the president. It's a better story that way.

    I hear ya Sting.

Ever since there was a thing called war and a thing called journalism - this crap has gone on.

Even during WWII, there were guys who printed negative or revealing crap about the military.

Now, how does the DoD and President handle that?

Disinformation - tho not considered ethical by some - it works.

So, they "leak" it out that they want to do this and that...

When, in truth, the real mission is no where near where the media thinks?

That's what I would do. Wasn't Reagan accused of leaking disinformation?

Journalists should start comparing US homicides to Iraq war deaths. Would be a real eye-opener.

Anyone read the book BIAS by Bernie Goldberg? Rather interesting read regarding bias in the media.

OT, but a good rant, anyway, Sting.

Right-O. Because we all know that if those pesky communists at the NY Times just left the war alone this whole thing would have been wrapped up by November 2003.

I think you guys are nuts. No sane person wants us to fail.

Of course we have been lied to at every turn by the people in charge. We have no reason for being there other than W trying to prove something to his daddy. Beause of W we are less safe, thousands of people are dead and we have gained absolutely nothing. I do wonder how we will measure success. I am all for peace and stability in the middle east, but I do not see it happening anytime soon. Rumsfeld's de-Baathification policy was a disaster, as was his attempt to wage war on the cheap. This administration had absolutely no plans for post-war Iraq. They refused to listen to the military leaders re what was needed, and now the soldiers and their families are paying the price.
  • If the media really wanted us to fail, they'd just admit that 9/11 was an inside job and this country would just go absolutely nuts!

Even John McCain now admits that American lives are being wasted.

"Americans are very frustrated, and they have every right to be," McCain said. "We've wasted a lot of our most precious treasure, which is American lives."

  • McCain now admits it is b/c he is running for President and he knows most people hate this war.

Quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of this "freedom of press" nonsense. In a time of WAR, I believe civil liberties and the freedom of the press should be put on hold until we're done with fighting the enemies and the WAR is finished. If that means throwing a few "innocent" people in jail, so be it. If it means throwing entire races of "undesirables" into a camp, then we should do that!

Did we all forget why we're fighting this war? We're going after the Al Qaeda who were BACK by Saddam Hussein. We have incontrovertible proof that it was Hussein and his terrorists who attacked us on September 11th and we have documented proof that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Of course, you'll never hear about this from the "Surrender Monkeys," who want us to pull out and have the terrorists follow us home.

When are the people of the United States going to realize it's the job of the media to work for the government instead of trying to bring it down?

I salute President George W. Bush!

    Thanks.

Did you actually read the article? The Colonel in charge of the damn region told Reuters what they were going to do. Sounds like the military WANTED the article printed. It's got NAMED sources. Maybe there are good reasons to make it clear the military is coming into Sadr City. I sure don't know. You probably don't, either. Even if one of us did, neither know as much as Colonel Billy Don Farris. If you have a beef, it's with him, not with the press outlet that reports what he told them ON THE RECORD.

"We have conducted special operations in Sadr City for some months but this will be the first time we will launch full-scale operations there and the first time we will have a permanent presence there," said Colonel Billy Don Farris, coalition forces commander for Sadr City and Adhamiya neighborhoods.

"There will be no sanctuaries in Iraq. We are going to go to every building and every house and incrementally clear the area. We will target any group that attacks Iraqi and U.S. troops," he told Reuters.

i heard one of the oscar nominees on nightline a few nights ago, some young dude that starred in that movie "the notebook".. anyway, he was talking about going to Africa where he's making a movie about child soldiers in uganda, and how the world hasnt done anything about 25,000 children who have died or been kidnapped, and he says "the world has done nothing" for these kids.. he thinks we should "go through it with them" and wants to "put people in the shoes" of these kids..

ok, im sure many other hollywood-types probably agree with him.. we need to help these people..

they would probably also say we had no business taking sadamm hussein out of power and trying to do something in Iraq, where thousands and thousands of people were tortured and killed by him..

    brilliance.. and possible hypocrisy..

everyone wants the U.S. to help the world, until we actually get there..

I strongly feel we have the finest military in the world - and the smartest. If they leaked out or announced to the press about this mission, it's because they wanted to for various strategic reasons.

Nobody said they were. The point is that a story like this would have been akin to aiding the enemy in the old days. You're not suppose to advertise your attack plans to the world. Sometimes the military does make PR announcements like this when they deem that their intentions are abvious and it's necessary to get local cooperation, but for the most part, the media has been eager to one-up each other by showing how much they know. Sometimes they'll do unbelievably stupid things. How many people remember Geraldo being kicked out of the Iraqi theater when he gave away the 101st's position and even drew a map in the sand while on camera?

If you honestly believe that Hussein in no way whatsoever supported/condoned Al Qaeda's actions then you should wake up to the world you live in. Just because you hate someone doesn't mean you won't join forces for your own benefit. Don't forget that the US teamed up with Russia in WWII to help defeat Hitler.

That he is, but like it or not, he IS the media. The fact of the matter is, journalistic responsibility has gone out the door in modern times. They (comprehensively) will publish ANYTHING regardless of the consequences just to get the "story" out there.
  • markj111markj111 Posts: 2,921 ✭✭✭
I absolutely believe that Hussein was in no way involved in 9/11. Have you read the 9/11 Commission Report, or any of the many books that are out on the subject. I mean books with facts-not the Ann Coulter-Bill O'Reilly BS.
  • kcballboykcballboy Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭
I didn't say he was involved. I said he supported it.

And by supported I don't mean he paid for it, I mean he toasted to our fallen civilians.

I'd be more than happy to provide an example. Do you recall the article published by Newsweek last year regarding an unsubstantiated rumor that a copy of the Koran was flushed down the toilet as part of an interogation in Q-Bay? The end result caused a wave of immediate attacks on civilian contract workers in which some where brutally killed.

How about the "respected" newspapers like the Boston Globe publishing article of GIs raping Iraqi women based on pictures taken from a p0rn site?

Dan Rather made a mistake and lost his job. George Tenet ovesees a CIA that manufactures intelligence and gets the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A hopelessly incompotent administration kill thousands and nothing happens. We are attacked by Al Qaeda and respond by attacking Iraq. Where is the logic in that? What are we trying to accomplish? Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum made no plans for the aftermath of the war. Their strategy is to blame everyone else. You can rip the media all you want, but the fact is that we were led to war based on lies and liars. I personally do not trust Dick "five-deferment" Cheney or George "draft dodger" W. They are despicable human beings who led us to war for the sake of ego and profits.

Once again, you're bringing politics into this. The war is a separate issue (by way, we attacked Afghanistan after 9/11, not Iraq).

My point is, the media only cares about the media. "It" does not care who is in the white house.

an unpopular president comes to the conclusion that the most popular presidents were in office during wartime. so to raise his image, he declares war.....on Canada. funny stuff with a lot of not-so-biased commentary. the president (Alan Alda) reminds me of Bush. i think our mission is complete in Iraq. come home.....please?

----and for the record, i'm glad we ousted Hussein, but there are MUCH bigger battles to be fought........but then, what do i know? believe the media? believe the government?? heck, i'd believe Homer Simpson over those 2 choices......

Personally, I believe the miliatary sometimes uses the media to their advantage. What better way to flush the bad guys out, catch them out of the city and reduce casualties....both our soldiers and Iraqi civilian.

I dont believe that most things are "leaked" unless purposely...I would think military secrets are kept well under wraps.
