1955 Topps (Grey backs vs. White backs?)

Hi all. Just picked up a lot of 39 1955 Topps commons (probably PSA 3-4 each) and was wondering if there is a premium on the white backs vs. the grey backs. Or vice versa. Any thoughts?

No not really, although many prefer the white backs.

A variation that has been noted is card 106 sullivan. 3 different types can be found.

Are you sure that you aren't talking about the '56 set?

I wondered the same. The only '55 T I've ever seen are all white backs?

55's are indeed white, some though are on a different stock of paper and not as glossed. Also many appear to have toned. I thought this is what he was talking about.

  • Hmm. Some are definately lighter than others. Then again, I do live in Canada. Could that make a difference? Were 1955 Topps released in Canada with different backs, like OPC?

As Steve said, there are some different tones but nothing really of importance. The '56 on the other hand, white backs command a premium.

Well, learn something new every day. I was aware of white vs. off-white for backs, though in '56 the white vs gray back is distinctively different. image

1956 Topps Baseball has both white and gray backs

SOME white backs are worth a bit more, those numbered from 101-180,... however the whites are more common in the sequence numbered 1-100, thus the grays are slightly more expensive for that series. The whites 101-180 command MORE extra worth percentage wise, than the grays 1-100 do.

Many collectors of this set, and most type collectors who wish a certain card from 56, place very little or no additional value on either type of back color. The difference in color, though slight, is real, but not very important to many.
