NEW YORK - A racy novel about baseball great Mickey Mantle has found a new home after being canceled in the wake of publisher Judith Regan's firing.

Lyons Press, an imprint of Globe Pequot Press that publishes many sports books, will release Peter Golenbock's "7: The Mickey Mantle Novel" on April 3, with a planned first printing of 250,000.

"Peter is a terrific storyteller with a great track record, and we're proud to have him on our list," Lyons associate publisher Eugene Brissie said Wednesday in a statement. "`7: The Mickey Mantle Novel' is a book that absolutely deserves to be published."

Golenbock has written numerous other books, including "Red Sox Nation," "Personal Fouls" and "Dynasty."

Regan's ReganBooks, an imprint of HarperCollins, was supposed to publish the Mantle book in March. But Regan had been strongly criticized for her attempted O.J. Simpson project, "If I Did It," and "7" was endangered after family members and former teammates of Mantle's objected to the novel, which includes an imagined tryst with Marilyn Monroe.

After Regan was fired in December, her imprint was disbanded and the Mantle book called off.

So what,..... Mantle is an idol, but not a boy scout.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

You're right of course - it just sort of struck me that Mantle might have actually enjoyed this book.

And as far as Marilyn Monroe - it seems like almost everyone and their brother "did" Marilyn Monroe. I wonder what Joe DiMaggio was thinking when he married this tart? LOL

I highly doubt Mantle had a tryst with Marilyn Monroe. Joe DiMaggio, and a few other high profile individuals had love affairs and marriage with this troubled woman, but I don't think there is any evidence that she was a "tart" or " hoar" or whatever you want to call it. There is do doubt that Mantle "got what he could get" while on the road, but anything else is the conjecture of somebody trying to sell a book full of BS. IMO.

I've got absolutely nothing against Marilyn Monroe. Actually I think she is an underrated actress. Let's just say on screen and off screen she no doubt tried to please as many people as possible, perhaps it seems in every way possible.

Marilyn seemed to go for the older "distinguished" types like a DiMaggio, Arthur Miller, John Kennedy, etc. I think it's unlikely she was with Mantle but it certainly shouldn't be ruled out.

Stevek - well then, don't rule out a relationship with me. Please include me with any future conjecture. That would be great.

Conjecture? Let's look at the facts...which have been well documented in numerous books and magazines.

    1. Marilyn loved being in the limelight and was often seen photographed and hanging around sports stars and other household name types.
    2. Marilyn dated a number of distinguished, popular guys.
    3. Marilyn liked to sleep around.
    4. Marilyn was married to Joe DiMaggio
    5. Mantle in the early 60's while Marilyn was still alive, in Marilyn's eyes may have become like a "Joe DiMaggio"

So the conjecture that Marilyn spent time with Mantle is of course conjecture - I have no idea and don't care that much...it's only fluff conversation...but it certainly is a possibility.

Anyway...every name mentioned here is dead so it doesn't really matter.
