Why 2006 Proof Platinum ?

RarityRarity Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭✭
Does the Mint intend to deplet its inventory of 2006 Proof Platinum before the introduction of the 2007 Proof Plats - the Mint is still selling the 2006 PR Plats?

The 2006 4-coin Proof Platinum set of 10,000 is sold out at the Mint. Thus, 2006 Proof Plat coins will be among the highest mintages of the series.

Because it was the year my second son was born?
  • Roughy four coin 5500 sets were sold. The coins will be average for proof plats...not great not bad.

I think it is good for the series. Considering how much attention was placed on the 20th anniversary and the new UNC-W Plat, the proofs managed to sell a good number. While expensive it is one of the great commemorative series because the reverse changes each year. image

    Eric,

The Mint website says the quantity minted for the 4-coin set is 10,000 and they're sold out.

How does that translate to 5,500 sets sold?

  • Reported Sales were 5,500 and change.

They are authorized to 10K, but they mint based on previously reported Monthly sales, which were slower than expected (Can't imagine why).

So they minted about 5,500 sets and sold them out.

    I agree.

A lot of these sold late last spring/early summer when the premium was very slight to bullion. Given that 2004 and 2005 were winners, a lot of people stocked up when bullion spiked.

Key to completing this small subset. I am focusing on the 2007 Executive Series. I think the 10th Anniversary set is off my radar screen this year unless they make a mintage below 3,000 with one limit per customer I will pass.
  • Rarity, the mint has a habit of selling the previous year's plat right up until the release of the current year's plat editions. I suspect the 2006s will be available for another few weeks.

I think the mint determined that it was not economically feasible to schedule another run of these, so they sold out whatever inventory they had in stock and are focusing on new issues.

image Thanks to this thread and many others about platinum ,I finally placed an order at mint.(2,25-proofs). With gold and silver it is easy to buy. Do not know why I waited so long to "discover" plats. I will be ordering some 07 to. image

The mint could have made up to 10000 sets but I believe they are only allowed to make them during the 2006 year so they just can't make another batch. I'll be interested to see if the 2007 proofs won't be the winner next year since everyone will be buying the UNC 2007 W's.
