James DOES know his stuff. However, if he (and all other coin dealers) stocked more half dimes that you need then you wouldn't need them anymore would you?
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
very cool thread and impressive that he has a matched set of both varieties
I have a pair of '01s, one low grade and problem free, the other with more details but has some old scratches, which at least avoid the major devices
Actually, I like them both equally, for different reasons, but would trade the pair for a decent Fine, or either one for an O.102 in just about any grade
Great post Dennis! The 1801 half dollars are exciting to own, they are scarce but with patience you can find one in the grade you want. The reverse on the very scarce O.102 was also used on the only 1802 die marriage. The O.101 is interesting with the assorted defect lumps on the reverse, found on all examples. The obverse is from the earlier master die and hub (more to come on this), which has better defined hair detail than 1806-1807 halves. I have owned two of each die marriage, trading up to VF.
Here is my O.102, VF30 or so:

Actually, James usually stocks over 100 Capped Bust Half Dimes at any given time. He told me that he covers the Half Dime trays with a big tray of Morgans everytime he sees Barndog or Cladiator walking towards him. Doesn't want to get cherrypicked.

it isn't likely that someone like James could be cherrypicked (but I won't rule it out!)

<< <i>Thread title is misleading, I was very interested in the information proferred even though my knowledge/interest in the 1801 half is minimal. >>
I predict that after reading this thread, you will be a lifelong 1801 Half enthusiast!
