Priority Mail Question

Do you think it would be a violation of the USPS rules to use the priority boxes to send coins by registered mail even tho the box identity will be covered by the brown tape? In most cases the weight is enough to require priority postage and for which you pay, but the package isn't handled like normal priority mail.

  • I do the same thing. Yes it is a violation, if they can see the red, white and blue priority tag they will give you crap about it and insist that the package must go priority.
Just wrap it well and seal it well with the security tape and no one knows.

I think all registered mail is considered priority. I use the priority boxes for registered stuff and nobody ever say's anything to me.
  • Actually they are very happy for you to use the Priority mail boxes for registered mail. I do it all the time now. They consider it an upgrade. They only get mad when you try to use them for first class mail. At least that is the way it is at my post office.
  • If you send registered 1st class it will cost you more. Priority Registered is the only way to mail higher end (over $500 value). It starts around $14.00 I think, maybe a bit more. Insurance is included with the postage on all registered mail up to $25,000.

all Registered Mail is not Priority Mail. First Class is an often-used means of sending Registered Mail for small parcels or large envelopes (like the kind typically used for single-coin shipments)

I pay $0.99 per thousand for insurance on my registered mails. Still cheap, but not included unless you pay for it.

I ship registered mail in a priority mail box several times a week. My post office is fine with it. I like the peace of mind, higher insurance limits, and cheaper insurance. I find it is much cheaper to ship high value packages registered mail than to send them priority mail. The insurance is much cheaper via registered. A $5K package can be mailed registered insured for $.277/$100.00 vs priority mail insured at $.994/$100.00.
