Finest known Honus Wagner Baseball Card

I know this is a coin forum but sometimes it is good to compare asset classes. In this case, the finest known T206 Honus Wagner Baseball Card recently sold for $2.35 million. It is a PSA NM-MT 8. It had previously been owned by Wayne Gretzky. Interestingly, he bought it for $1.2 million in 2000. Thats a return of 11% per year. There are 50-60 known copies and PSA (baseball card's version of PCGS) has encapsulated 28 of them. Only three of them have earned grades of 4 (VS-EX) or better. It apparently was bought by a private collector in California but with a minority ownership by SCP Auctions. This seems similar to the partnerships that have occurred in the highest priced coins over the past few years. I would have thought someone would have paid $2 million to own it outright.

You mean one of the greatest ballplayers of all time? That's why the card is so valuable, because he was such a good player.

He was easily the greatest player of his generation.

Mothers of 9 year old boys have heard of him too, however unwillingly
