Searched through rolls of nickels...

I picked up 25 rolls of nickels from the bank a few weeks ago and finished going through them earlier this evening. Well, I was able to fill the folders from 1962 on except for a few (1962-D, 1967, 1981-D, 2006-D), with a few earlier extras (1941, 1952, 1954-D, 1955, 1958-D, 1959-D, 1960-D, and 1961-D). There were no buffalo nickels and no wartime nickels to be found.

Most of the coins were heavily scratched and dinged.

I think I'll try more nickels if my bank has more rolls ready to go. These were from a branch of my bank in Queens, NY... I'll try a branch closer to home in central NJ.

Collecting: Cents, Dansco 7070, Half Dollars, 1947, 1976, random pieces I like

You can fill a lot of holes that way although, as you noticed, it is tough to fill a lot of them with anything very nice.

If you keep at it long enough, just about the only things you will never find are the 39-D, the 42-D, and the 50-D. These days a lot of the branch mint coins earlier than the late 50's will be a long, long wait however -- and those that you finally find will be in horrendous shape.

But ... it's free, leastways costs nothing but your time.

  • Pretty Good.

I enjoy looking through rolls of nickels. I am amazed at how consistently I find 1% to be 1962 and before.

No you won't find any early ones in mint state but it is still neat to find 60+ year old coins circulating.

    Enjoy

  • I've searched almost 300 rolls of nickels and have been able to put together a full set except for a few war nickels and some dates from the early '50s
  • You did pretty good finding a 55P, I've looked through thousands of rolls over 25 years and haven't found one (it's the only one I haven't plucked from circulation.)

A lot of wear on coins now days is harsher than on coins in the past. Coins
used to have a much greater velocity and were almost polished from constant
usage. Now days coins have much more of a tendency to make a single trip
to a store or consumer and then be returned to the bank where they are counted
and sent to the "FED" where they are recounted. The machines impart much of
the wear now and are much rougher than sliding on surfaces and in cash registers.

You can find nice lightly worn and well made coins but it's much more difficult than
in the past. Quarters have the highest velocity so well worn coins are more easily
found but they also tend to be more heavily worn.
