if it was a "P" Mint coin i'd call it MS63, since it's from a branch Mint i'll say MS65. all things considered it seems to have nice luster and a reasonably nice strike, though typically weak at the high points on both sides, just above the Chief's braid and on Black Diamonds front shoulder.
63 (if they were in a bad mood)-64 (if they were in a good mood)...IMO if it went any higher it's a gift... nicks on focal points of face are my reason...(on its' own, the Reverse is 65+)
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
The strike is nice for the date/mint, but it is remarkably clean. All I can see are a few insignificant ticks on the obverse. Very nice reverse hair detail and a split tail. Luster is not slap-you-in-the-face, because of the copper toned stripes, but it is still strong. A very nice coin for the issue!!
MS-64, to many nicks and a bit too weak on the obverse to be any higher in my opinion. I'm not crazy about Buffs with improper alloy mix, but this coin is certainly not unattractive. I for one would love to have it. Just a observation, but do you notice how well struck the periphery is on both sides (full head , split tail , and full horn, LIBERT, etc... ) and how poor the strike is on the central areas? This would leave me to believe that the dies were actually fine ,but the striking pressure was not. Oh yeah, nice clash under the chin.
BTW...just wondering that since this coin just got back from PCGS...how did the holder already get scratches on it?...tsk,tsk

Nice upgrade. It has a great strike for a 1919-S. The luster is bright and flowing as seen in the whole slab picture. Often the true luster gets washed out in the super close up pictures. There are a few marks on the cheek but none too deep. If this coin were a 1937, it would get a 64 grade. But a 1919-S will get a bump up for having a great strike, luster and eye appeal.
Sometimes I amaze myself. I looked at the obverse, then the reverse, muffled to myself "sixty-five", then scrolled down and saw the slab. I'm in no shape or form a buffalo grader, but sometimes it's nice to see I at least have some skill in them. Thanks for the thread.
im impressed by all the great guesses. the coin in hand has just two little ticks on the cheek and a small almost round little mark on the I of five cents on the reverse. for the date it also has nice luster with the copper streaks going through it.

Now remember---we are going to find out how close PCGS came to OUR grade not the other way around.
Very Nice Strike for a 1919-S.

Sweet coin.

i like the die clash under the chin
i have a similar clash on a `17 i think it is..
the obverse could get it in a 64 slab but I'd call it a very solid MS-65.
So, what's the story behind the coin?
Was it sent in raw, regraded, or reholdered?
tell us, tell us, tell us do.
