I found my first error! Extra "L" on edge of Washington dollar

I was looking through a roll of the new presidential dollars that my Dad brought home from the bank and I found this. image If you look between the U and the S in Pluribus you can see another "L". (Sorry about the picture. I guess my hand was shaking. image )

I emailed a picture to CONECA already and they said it was an error so I guess it is. Anyway, it's my first and it's pretty exciting! image

Is that an L or an I?
And is it raised or incused, and is it normal or mirror?

Market it as an "extra upside-down 7" and hurry and toss it on ebay image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Seeing it in hand, it is a true "L", incused and faint.

Cool. I have seen what appears to be an upside down W or M in a worn raised lettering on some of these and am real curious if they at some point tried to have a raised letter in the edge and then ground them off for the incused lettering.

Here's one that looks like a "U" that is not incused.

And here is the "M"that again, is not incused.

  • Sorry about the picture. image I need either a QX5 microscope or Russ. image

It looks like a "L" not a "I" or a scratch, or a dent. It is incuse but not as deep as the normal letters.

I think there will be a whole bunch of new errors with the lettered edge- I think this is the only exciting thing with these new coins. I wonder how the slabbers will accommodate these errrors in new slabs so you can see the error?

They may turn out to be so common that no one wants to bother with the error designation.

I think only the most spectacular, specific types of edge errors will continue to carry a significant premium. Edge errors are starting to look common as dirt. They're cool to find, but as far as worth, I doubt they'll carry too much in the general case.

One has already been discovered. Pictures have been posted but I don't know if it was here or ATS. If I see it again I'll try and let you know where it is or post a link.

I posted my attempt at explaining this here. I don't know if it's correct or not, but I can't come up with any other explanations.

Dings, dents, and doinks all over these Washingtons. I noticed today that my Philadelphia Wrapped $$ have the D on them. ??

Have you considered the governent is trying to change the spelling of that word and it will soon be the correct one?
