I picked this up for melt a few weeks ago from a local dealer. he had purchased a role of pre civil war double eagles. I got one for a type set and didn't think I could go wrong for $660. anyway this was one of the nicer ones, there were two 1854 and this one had a larger date. Didn't think much of it until I got home and looked in the redbook (grey sheet doesn't list it). I collect early bust material and know very little about double eagles. Does this coin carry any premium. It is much dirtier looking in hand. I grade it as a high VF to low EF any opinions would be welcome.
Thank you

    Here is the reverse
  • Hi...my guess on grade for be AU50......hard to tell if it has been cleaned...

The 1854 Large Date is the smaller part of the total mintage 0f 757,xxx of the Phily 1854.

The large date is not easy to spot versus the standard date. Many publications call the standard date a "Small Date" but the difference is so slight that I think QDB calls the small date a "Medium Date".

I think the large date has a slight premium over the small date.....as long as the slabber will state the variety on the slab....I think PCGS and NGC both do.

    Hope this helps

  • nice solid AU50, which carries a little bit of a premium
  • I don't see how you could go wrong buying it for close to melt. I like the older gold type coins and often think that it is cool that there is not hardly any premuim on a gold coin that old.

Nice coin FT, great grab. If you want to sell it, look my way.

Should be able to snag about 2 c-notes over melt.

Nice looking coin. I would grade it XF45, although it is possible that it would be body-bagged for cleaning. The large date variety is scarcer, makes up less than 20% of the total surviving population.

I believe just recently (in the last few years) PCGS has noted the distinction on the holder. At near melt values, that was a great buy.
