Potential vintage find.............

Not less than 5 minutes ago one of my co-workers told me that one of the employees in his department has a complete Topps run from 67-72 that was given to him by his aunt who worked for Topps. Oh how I would love for this to pan out for me, but the odds of this happening are probably something like this:

1) Odds of him actually having these cards: 25-1.

2) Odds of these cards being high grade: 250-1.

3) Odds of him deciding to sell these cards to me: 1000-1.

And just for fun..............

4) Odds of these cards being "presentation set" quality: 100,000-1.

Oh well, I can still dream. image

Me too. Do to the specifics of the story, it's not impossible. How many people out there would make up (or otherwise mistake) a story that a Topps employee gave them sets of baseball cards? Of course, that doesn't mean they're presentation sets.

    (edited for punctuation.)
  • odd that these are 87- 92 sets.... 50:1

I have found people have unreal expectations for their cards. They all want MINT price guide prices regardless of condition, etc.... Good luck to you!

    Treetop -

I've got my fingers crossed. You just never know and that's why it pays to check things out. I'll be following up on it, for sure.

By the way, scan of '57 McDougald coming later tonight.

Ya never know - if the guy quoted that year range - I wouldn't expect to see 88D binders and stuff.

It will be interesting to see what he wants for them.

Good luck - perhaps this is yo lucky day!

Agreed. Having the years quoted is much, much more auspicious then simply being told that they're 'really old'.

The problem I always have with these deals is like what Larry said; I get there, and I'm confronted with someone who has a bunch of VG-EX cards and the latest Beckett. At which point the deal invariably turns south.

Still, there are exceptions out there. Here's hoping this is one of them.

Well, whattya know. I have at least hit the odds on whether he has the cards....sort of. Not 67-72 Topps, but 72-75 Topps. Better than nothing, by far.

He is a coworker of mine so I 've worked it out with him that he's going to send me a sampling of the cards from '72 and '73 so I can review them. He has said the cards are in superb condition, opened directly from wax and then hardly touched thereafter. The shipment of about 60-70 high numbers from each year will arrive this week. This way I can decide whether making the drive or flight to his home is worth it. It will be interesting to see and I will keep the board posted.

Well, I got a sampling of the cards today. He sent me some '72 and '73 cards that I had requested (mostly high numbers). The 73's are nice but not premium, mostly 7's and 8's with perhaps a 9 sprinkled in there somewhere. High number rookie stars cards are really nice (he did not send the Schmidt but does have 3 of them). Looks like they did indeed come from wax as some have typical centering issues, some wax stains, etc. The 72's are much worse, EX at best and only useful as set fillers.

I'm going to call him and see whether the rest of his collection is more representative of the 72's or 73's, because there is a huge difference. Looks like a mixed bag on this one.

  • This happened in 1999. My brother-in-law owns a resturant and one of the old-timers who show's up for breakfast everyday. Told him he has a basement full of cards and wishes he could find someone to buy them from him. Well my brother-in-law called me and set up a time I could go look at some of the stuff he had... Well I showed up and looked though his vast collection of cards. He was not liying about 95% of the basement was full from top to bottom. Almost all of his stuff was sorted and boxed as sets. After three hours of looking though his collection with great dissapointment. The oldest cards I found were 1983 Topps Baseball. He must of stopped collecting around 1993 because thats where it all the sets stopped. I asked him how much he wanted for all of the cards... He said "Well I must have atleast $400,000.00 in all of the cards. As it turns out his wife died in 1982 and he retired in 1983. So all he would do is buy cards and sort them all day long making sets. I gave him my phone number and told him I would find someone to make him a offer for the cards. The next day his son called and started telling me his dad was not going to sell me his inheritance. I started to laugh and told him where are you going to spend all of the $2500.00. Thats what I offered his dad about a 1/2 hour before he called. I explained that was about all the cards were worth. Somewhere about 95% of the stuff his dad had would be impossible to sell. I told him to insure it and collect for a catastrophe. I did manage to buy all of the 1983-85 Baseball stuff for about $1000.00. I never heard of what happened to the rest.
This is not the first time someone has found me a huge collection of worthless stuff. The 30 cases of 1990 Score hockey was also a great find.

MrCardSniper and Stone pretty much hit on what I was going to say...

The fact you were quoted specific years is a good sign, so I too would not expect binders of 88Donruss. However, regardless of the quality the likelihood he wants far too much for them is very high.

So my odds would look something like thi:
    Odds it's a 1967-1972 run 2:1
Odds he wants 90% of book if not full book: 1:1
Odds the cards are worth that 100:1

    Just my .02

If it's 1987 Topps you will get:

    #67 Bill Swift
    #68 Tony LaRussa
    #69 Lonnie Smith
    #70 Charlie Hough
    #71 Mike Aldrete
    #72 Walt Terrell

If it's 1988 Topps you will get:

    #67 Ken Oberkfell
    #68 Dave Dravecky
    #69 Mike Hart
    #70 Roger Clemens
    #71 Gary Pettis
    #72 Dennis Eckersley

Incidently, Topps moved production from Brooklyn to Eastern Pa around 1970, 71. Unless she worked in the front office, it would be surprising if she worked in the production end at both locations....but who knows?

Or odds of these sets actually being 1987-92. OK, so they might be off a couple of decades. image
