New Washington Dollar Error - Split Planchet

TexastTexast Posts: 1,899 ✭✭✭✭
I found this in a roll today, at first I thought it was excess metal from the punch process that folded over until I looked at it under magnification and could see that the planchet was split 360 degrees around the edge. Im not sure if the spit occoured due to crushing during the edge imprint or not, after going though 70 rolls it's the only one I'e seen like this, any ideas on other causes or what type of error this would classify as?

Split planchet? Or broken collar. I would think it's a broken collar.

Are those lines raised or incuse? If raised then it's a die crack...of the 3rd die.

I suspect that is marks from going through the edge lettering machine. I do not know what model the US Mint is using, but here is a thread describing one design.

The cracks are Incuse, there not pressed in it is an actual spliting of the metal.

    Interesting.
  • I don't think it is anything special. Most if not all of the few hundred coins I've gone through have a similar edge example.

If there is separation, could this be caused by the edge lettering process? When pressed from the side I could see a tendency for layers to separate.

A broken collar would cause a raised not incuse line I think.

I added another photo, as you can see this is a split rather than anything struck into the side, I've seen a lot of lousy edges on these dollars but nothing that was "Split Apart"
