looking for a good loupe or table magnifier?

So I have trouble looking through some of these tiny loupes, so I am looking for a good quality one but with a large(mm) viewing glass.

I have seen these tripod type glasses that sit on a table, but still seem to have small lenses, or large dome shaped lenses that seem terribly distorting. image

My problem is I only have one good hand, and it makes handling coins and a loupe tough at the same time.

So any reccomandations on a qood quality large lense loupe or table glass that will allow me to look closely at coins without having to squint or juggling the coin and a loupe at the same time?

Thanks Rob

  • You might try the local fabric stores.

Try web sites for Bausch & Lomb, Zeiss, or Eschenbach. It will probably be expensive, but the quality you need will be there. Don't waste your time with cheap, no name brands as the lenses will probably be poorly made.

Meade has a lighted one that I've been meaning to check out. based on their telescope heritage, they mayhave good optics (but they do cheap stuff too so evaluate it before you buy it).
  • You'll find that large lenses typically have low magnification and/or unacceptable distortion. A digital system that puts the image on you computer screen may be a better way to go.
