Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
i just wanted to mention that i have no problem with modern stuff. if i did, i wouldnt carry 90 percent modern stuff in my inventory even as of today. my problem is with jgarci who tries to push 1993 refractors onto other members. in addition to that, he is basically outright cruel to people on here--saying he is happy that people got caught up in the pack rip scam.
i also have a problem with that other person selling stolen property. i dont care if it can be proven or not, its horrible for the industry. its very obvious who that is since esp he doesnt sell anything but 1993 refractors. he actually questioned the legitimacy of them about 1 year ago before he acquired the (in). if someone is that close to the actual source, the prudent thing to do is nail him, not take advantage of your position and grade a bunch to acquire an air of legitimacy and sell the rest off raw on ebay. you can even see the submission results he posts, 5-10 counts of a particular player on each submission. it doesnt take rocket science to see what is going on when that person has probably submitted close to 1000 (1993) refractors in the past year or so. thats alot of pack breaking otherwise. this person is a complete piece of chit in my mind. bottom line-- ignorance of the law is no defense. it is absolutely dealing in stolen property.
stuff like that has destroyed which otherwise was a wonderful product. a beautiful design, breakthrough technology and perceived to be scarce at the time of issue. --all for nothing now. i truely feel bad for the collectors who spend their hard earned money on these things years ago before they were backdoored and then the floor fell out from under them.
i have no idea what the true connection is between garci and the seller- maybe he gets a discount off the final sale price since he is such a good customer. win-win for both if that is the case. pumps up the auctions and garci gets more of his refractors for his collection. who knows what is really going on. i am not saying that is the case here, but something doesnt feel right here.
btw, if you search me out in threads, you can see that many times when people post their modern pulls on the forums i gladly go up and offer a (congrats) or (nice card) to them. i can appreciate modern stuff just like the next person, my issues are stated above. thats all.
Is it just me or does that card look a little off?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
On a completely unrelated note, I'm going to Best Buy today to pick out a new DVD player.

Get an upconverting player until the HD/Blu-Ray thing is decided. It looks good (kinda like HD-TNT), outputs at 720p, and you don't have to buy new DVDs!!!
I think it is incredible that the 1993 Refractors still generate such emotion in people. It is nice that people take pride in collecting something worthwhile.
Many, many people on here love to bash 1993 Refractors and expend TREMENDOUS amounts of time and energy to do so. Their jealousy is palpable and I sincerely am honored at the attention.
You know what they about "no such thing as bad press?" This rings very true here.
jmbk- Not sure it can be classified as jealousy, but something close to it. It's more along the lines of incredulousness (not sure it's a word) that a card like the Shane Mack PSA 9 in a "modern" issue can bring $500+ when low pop commons from the sets that they collect and understand the value of bring $50-$100. I think it can be considered jealousy, but in reality I think it's more about a "how in the hell can these people pay those prices" kind of thing along with a misperception about the set.
What people fail to realize is that this particular issue is a landmark set in the hobby (the first super-premium set and insert set) and it's importance is what drives the value of the cards, whether the print run is accurate or not. In fact, I suspect the cards would be worth the same whether they were stamped 241 or 500.
I also suspect that "haters" of this set fall into one of two groups: 1) Always hated it- Collected vintage back in 1993 when the set came out and didn't understand all the hoopla, or 2) Now hate it- Spent the 90s collecting all the insert sets and lost their a$$es and have since soured on all modern inserts and collect strictly vintage now. Either way, they can't understand why people are still paying the prices they are. And to a certain degree, I agree that commons shouldn't bring what they do sometimes, but lost is the fact that the Ripken, Ryan, Clemens, Piazza, Thomas, etc..... are all landmark cards of widely collected players. For most of them, this is the most pertinent card of that player besides their rookie. That's why the set is so valuable to the hobby, and the stuff that comes with that reputation (high dollar commons, questionable print run, people hoarding a particular player, etc.......) are secondary.
The really funny thing about the anti-passion for this set is that a lot of the people slinging mud on it have also come on these boards with the message: "Collect what you like and don't knock anybody for collecting what they like."
Lee
Edit to say- It's one thing to knock somebody THAT collects something, but an entirely different thing to knock somebody FOR collecting something.
look josh, or mr ball, or jmbkb4, whatever name you want to go by-- the issue is with you --not the cards in particular. you brought attention to yourself when you were bragging that you profit $5000 per month selling the 1993 refractors and that you have been doing it for over a year. in the 1993 refractor market, there is only 1 way that can possibly happen. i would have never even bothered to look into it until you decided to screw with me out of the blue. as i said a few times, the refractors are a very nice set. by the way, i never threatened your family. that is pretty weak to even make that up. if i were to decide to come after you sport, i would not warn you first. i assure you.
i didnt even know your full name until today.
lee- i am assuming you were referring to me on that comment about saying to people to collect what they like and dont knock anybody for collecting what they like. as i indicated this is a personal thing between josh and myself and really has nothing to do with the cards themselves. they have become the vehicle. none of this would have ever come up if he hadnt provoked me. thats a fact.

Agreed Lee.
But, I think we both said about the same thing -- you just did it a little more kindly! In any case, I look forward to helping many more people with their sets. It is a fun set to collect!
By the way, nice job on the refractor sale. The buyer always pays in a timely fashion and leaves great feedback. Good guy.
jmbk- I'd actually love to put the set together some day. I think I'll wait until the PSA hoopla and player registries dies down a little (inevitable) and the prices for the semis and "tough to find" commons goes down a bit. I'd have to kick my own ass if I paid $500 for a Shane Mack.
<< <i>since he is such a great customer of yours and you make sooo much profit on these auctions, do you give him a discount off his winning bids??? >>
I sincerely appreciate your continued interest, but I do not feel at liberty to discuss such matters with you.
I think JMB needs a dog or something because it's obvious he's not getting enough attention in real life. How the heck did this thread turn into another one of his, "EVERYONE IS JEALOUS OF ME LOL" routine?
For the record:
Anyone who has followed my posts on 1993 refs will know I've been telling it like it is regarding the set for a long time (since at least 2004 when the wholesalers started dumping the cards onto the market). This was way before JMB even knew what a refractor even was because he's stated he didn't get started with refractors until 2 years ago. These are irrefutable facts one can find by searching the board and no amount of rambling by JMB can change that.
Here's a PM from JMB to me in 2005.

With how easy it's become to get 10s for '93 refs from PSA, you'd have to be nuts to hold onto them with how those two are fighting it out on the Registry.
I would definitely take advantage of the situation.

Joe Kent and Dick Weigle are 2 of the top 3 guys on the 1993 Finest refractor set registry.
I know Josh has been trying to ingratiate himself with the board lately, but he's his own worst enemy with this "the world is jealous of me" BS.

I'm sure there are posters on the board who don't like me or agree with what I have to say, but that doesn't mean I think they're jealous of me. We just don't get along. No big deal.

sure, it's relevant because it's a message about refractors.. what im not getting is why you feel it's an important PM.. is it an attempt to show that you know so much about refractors that jmbkb felt the need to ask your advice? what are you trying to accomplish by posting that PM is what i'm wondering..
do you think its unethical to let bidders go against each other? because it looks like you agreed with the premise of jmbkb's message..

I would like to make an appeal for a truce between the refractor/modern guys and anyone on the other side of this.
How about agreeing to disagree - with respect to collectibility, value, investment potential etc.
Shake hands and talk about my favorite topic for a bit - the old World Poker Tour and Shana Hiatt!

That kind of "power?"
I no got.
But - ya know - that's not a bad idea.
But, you know as well as I - that there will be overflow - also - it will split the crowd - all and all.
Keep in mind - a lot fo the collectors here are hybrids - modvints.
I used to do 3 modern sets a year along with the vintage and memorabilia I collect.
It just got too expensive.
I do feel your pain tho.

How can we get a Modern card forum, STone, if any one knows it's you.

The request is simple.
Ya can just email PSA - subject - "boards"
And tell them how it would take some of the pressure off discussions if the modern guys had their own board.
It was from a few of us emailing PSA that they added the non-sport forum a couple of years ago. I think the mail thrust came from Speeder?
That's my advice.

Not sure it can be classified as jealousy, but something close to it.

Basically, yeah, that's what you should do.
With how easy it's become to get 10s for '93 refs from PSA, you'd have to be nuts to hold onto them with how those two are fighting it out on the Registry.
I would definitely take advantage of the situation.

just got my hands on Molitor 10 (1/1) and Yount 10 (1/1) 1993 Refractors. What should I do? Set up an auction where Joe Kent and Dick Weigle bid each other's brains out?
Seriously, Josh. Get over yourself. >>
why is the PM from 2005 relevant?

were those 2 gentlemen customers of jmbkb4? i certainly hope not. that is a pretty rude comment about them. >>
Joe Kent and Dick Weigle are 2 of the top 3 guys on the 1993 Finest refractor set registry.
I know Josh has been trying to ingratiate himself with the board lately, but he's his own worst enemy with this "the world is jealous of me" BS.

im not sure its a rude comment.. but regardless, DBH agreed with it and said he'd take advantage of them (errr, the "situation")..
<< <i>Good point. You have an invested interest in 1993 Refractors you say, and others don't.
When someone [else] continually changes their signature to talk about me, replies obsessively to all of my postings, and then inquires hungrily about specific transactions -- what am I supposed to think?
Please advise. Thanks >>
Just because someone doesn't like you, it doesn't mean they're jealous of you.
I'm sure there are posters on the board who don't like me or agree with what I have to say, but that doesn't mean I think they're jealous of me. We just don't get along. No big deal.

<< <i>For the record:
Anyone who has followed my posts on 1993 refs will know I've been telling it like it is regarding the set for a long time (since at least 2004 when the wholesalers started dumping the cards onto the market). This was way before JMB even knew what a refractor even was because he's stated he didn't get started with refractors until 2 years ago. These are irrefutable facts one can find by searching the board and no amount of rambling by JMB can change that.
Here's a PM from JMB to me in 2005.

I didn't think I'd need to explain the relevance of the PM, but what exactly are you not getting?

sure, it's relevant because it's a message about refractors.. what im not getting is why you feel it's an important PM.. is it an attempt to show that you know so much about refractors that jmbkb felt the need to ask your advice? what are you trying to accomplish by posting that PM is what i'm wondering..
do you think its unethical to let bidders go against each other? because it looks like you agreed with the premise of jmbkb's message..

<< <i>since he is such a great customer of yours and you make sooo much profit on these auctions, do you give him a discount off his winning bids??? >>
I sincerely appreciate your continued interest, but I do not feel at liberty to discuss such matters with you.
Thanks. >>
