anyone ever heard of Sunoco presidential series?

today is my birthday and my aunt gave me a coin collection that belonged to my uncle who departed this world a few months ago...nothing especially nice but this one token..it has a picture of Nixon on the front and on the back it says "The Sunoco Presidential Coin Series" with the Sunoco logo(gas station) and the date 2000 at the top and a small number 6 at the bottom...are these collectible? I cant say that ive ever heard of them. Its about the size of a half dollar and greatly resembles the new washington dollar obverse.

I have not... I have heard of and seen political buttons made for Sunoco by NG Slater in 1972 that has a juggate picture of McGovern/Shriver and Nixon/Agnew that said A Winner Every Time... interesting items as are the items you describe.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • looks like i may have to do some research on these
  • I remember seeing them then but that is about all.
I think they had a set in the 60's as well.

A quick sumary : 1997 Readers Digest puts out a Presidential series that is far better in design then the U.S.Mint series,,,, Sunoco has apeared to have accomplished the same task ,,,,,, Chunkey Sleeze here I cum . image

In the early 1970s the Shell Oil Co. was giving state tokens for gasolene purchases.
They are quarter size bronze and mounted in a cardboard holder.
Really pretty and one could swear the US State Quarters were a close copy of these.

I think I remember reading a thread about these a couple of months ago. I can't find it but maybe someone else can find it and link it.
