DENVER (AP) - Broncos running back Damien Nash collapsed and died after a charity basketball game in suburban St. Louis on Saturday, less than two months after the slaying of teammate Darrent Williams.

``We have been informed of the passing of Damien Nash,'' team spokesman Jim Saccomano said Saturday night. ``We are attempting to get more details. We have people in Indianapolis that we're attempting to contact. We do know it's true.''

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and general manager Ted Sundquist were at the NFL's scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Officials at Christian Hospital in St. Louis said the 24-year-old Nash died early Saturday evening. The cause of death wasn't immediately determined.

Nash collapsed shortly after participating in the game benefiting a foundation named for older brother Darris Nash. The foundation raises money for heart transplant research. It was established last month, after Darris Nash received a heart transplant.

Nash was from East St. Louis, Ill., and played two years at Missouri after playing at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. A fifth-round draft choice by Tennessee in 2005, he played in three games for the Titans before his release.

The Broncos signed him as a free agent last season and he played in three games, rushing for 98 yards on 24 carries.

The Broncos are still reeling from the slaying of Williams, who was shot once in the neck while leaving a New Year's Eve party in his rented stretch Hummer in downtown Denver hours after the season ended. His slaying remains unsolved.

Thats sad. Obviously heart disease runs in his family being that his bro had a transplant.

He probably had some type of heart defect as well that no-one knew about

He had a nice burst. Played well in one game that I remember. Shanahan may have liked him, because rumors were flying about both Bell's not being back. Tough year all around in Denver.

Maybe Marfans syndrome did the guy in. That is apparently got Hank Gathers 13-15 years ago in the College Hoops season with Loyola Marymount.

A sad day indeed when anyone (athlete or not) that young is done in by a heart problem.

Sorry to see that......my Grandfather lived to be 88, ate bacon and eggs for breakfast every day of his life, and had meat and potatoes for dinner. A lot of this stuff is genetic.
