I BOUGHT A ROLL...

of the "Sphinx" dollars. I opened it and looked at them all. Now I have an urge to head for the Chuck E Cheese pizza place. What's up with that?

I bought a few rolls and handed out coins to people at work.
Everyone had the same thing to say about them.
1 - Why does George look so pissed off?
2 - The back looks like a Chuck E Cheese token.

OK, well I agree they don't work the greatest but since they are plentiful I am having lots of fun spending them to see the looks on tellers faces. I also give them to my son for his allowance.
  • i think its the metal that makes them look so cheap like a token.

  • Jeezzz..........these things are the worst I have seen. The only decent one I found in the one roll I purchased today had a hole in the cheek. The rest looked pretty good but they are fugly!

I finally got a roll. That alone was an ordeal. Citibank was the first one I could actually find that had any. They would only do one roll per customer, recorded your name, and made you wait for 15 minutes for them to get the roll from the vault. Looks like they are eager to get these into circulation! Would have thought I was buying >$10K in bullion. (Actually, they were going to not "sell" them to me once they found out I only had their credit card and not a banking account with them.)

So I got them and had little expectations having already heard about the quality. I must say I was not misled. Even for circulation strikes, these are ghastly. There are more nicks on George's face than Michael J. Fox's after shaving or a prom queen's in a NY NBA locker room. The surprising thing though was that all of the rim edges are prooflike. The luster is not doing so well for new coins. I suspect it will require cherrypicking through a massive number of these and then carefully storing them to have them hold up in high grade. Went though about half of them so far. No obvious die or striking errors and nothing worthy of a Dansco hole.

I got 2 rolls of D mint Washie dollars. Opened one, cherried the best 2 coins, spending the rest. Will save one roll unopened.

Same plan for the rest of the presidents. Need to find a trading partner on the east coast who will trade me a nice P for one of my cherried D mint coins.

  • I don't like them, but then again, I don't dislike them.
They seem to spend just fine. I never was too partial to the one dollar bill either, but I'll take them as pay and spend them.
