1916-D Mercury Dime - eBay confusion

This auction just has the word wrong written all over it.

1916-D Mercury Dime backwards scan?

Who sells a coin that would grade this high, for $4,000? Then I looked at past auctions...Interesting Book Purchase jumps out at me.

I grabbed the photo and flipped it horizontally in photoshop, it looked okay. Thoughts? Is this counterfeit?

Maybe he was trying to authenticate his coin?

I thought that the image might be stolen from another auction or site and the seller was using the reversed image to help avoid detection.

Maybe this is the 1 in 1000 time that someone gets "something for nothing", or even a good squre deal from an honest seller... I wouldn't touch it. Too many other places to spend the money.

way too much outlay for raw buyin for me but a coin of this magnitude surely could be arranged with an escrow clause noting that upon return to escrow agent from anacs or ngc net detail visit all funds over submitting fees will then be released

when you message this seller of bid intent with escrow agreement only and if no reply...hmmm...no need to wonder if or why

Seller claims a 'dealer' offered him 3k. he further states in the auction that his reserve is 3.5k. How much more can he get above 3k if the auction ends at 3.5k? With listing fees, final value fees, and paypal fees all eating a nice chunk of that 'extra' 500.00 how much more is he actually getting? If it was me I think I would have taken the 3k. The way his coin presents in the auction and it not being authenticated I doubt it will even sell.

Yes, I had to flip the image in the program and that's how it came out. I give 3 days to authenticate.

  • Coin checks out as far as the diginostics go. Remeber not all coins are certified. I have many coins that are over $500.00 and not certified. Does that make them less of a coin?

According to many, including many on this board, yes.

Of course not. Selling them on e-bay would bring out the questions however.

Is it just me, but when you look at that reversed image, after seeing so many Merc's over the years, do you feel like you're in a parallel universe or something?
It will be intersting to see how this all turns out.
    Good Luck!
