Ohio Coin Expo Report

I went to the Ohio coin expo yesterday. I left home at 10:30 and arrived in Richfield at about 11:30. I stopped at a coin shop that was near the show and picked up a 1959 and a 1961 proof set. Here are the two coins that had caught my eye.

I then went to the Quality Inn where the show was being held. My first purchase was a boxed 1953 Proof Set with this 1953 Half Dollar.

I will probably send it to NCS and then PCGS.

I also picked up an 1882 Half Eagle in an old ANA OFFICIAL GRADE holder that was graded XF-40, a toned 1958-D Franklin half in NGC MS-65 FBL, a couple of circ Morgans, and an 1876-CC dime in VF-35 for my 7070.

I met Keets, Kranky, and Clevegreg and had a nice talk with them.

The show was packed with people, and there were over 100 dealers set up. There were a lot of Morgans, a lot of gold coins, a couple of dealers that had a lot of slabbed error coins, and a couple of dealers with ancient and world coins. There were a lot of slabbed coins from all of the different TPGs. I don't remember seeing any SGS slabs though.

It was one of the best coin shows I've been to, and I plan on going back in November.

Nice meeting you at the show yesterday!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

JW for anyone who went to the show, was there any seated dollar/liberty nickels there? I'm thinking of going up but those are my prime interest areas.

There were a few, but not that many. I mainly noticed the proof Liberty nickels. One dealer had a nice group along with some proof shield nickels.

Here is the report I wrote on another site:

Today was the second day of the Ohio Coin Expo in Richfield, OH (close to Cleveland). Since we were going to the Cleveland Auto Show we decided to stop by. Entrance fee was $5 which really wasn't "too bad".

Walking through the door I was blasted with the smell of old attics and body odor, not a nice thing considering we were at a hotel. But after a bit you got used to it. The first table I looked at was full of ACG overgraded crap. That gave me a good laugh.

Going on down the row it was table after table of Morgans and $20 gold eagles......big whoop. Finally got to a table with a dealer who basically specialized in errors. Double struck, broadstruck, struck out of the collar, triple struck Lincoln Cent, you name it he basically had it. Also saw my first seller to dealer trade go on there. Hour and a half later, same seller was there chatting it up with the dealer.

Another five or so tables go by with nothing that interested me. Really wasn't on a mission for anything special, maybe some world silver. 99% of the silver bullion was trading at $16 per ounce, didn't surprise me. One dealer had boxes of world silver crowns for $11-$12 each......all junk. Finally found a dealer who had a lot of silver bullion ranging from ASE to bars. That's where I purchased my 1/4oz Engelhard bullion piece. Reasonably priced as well and very nice. A seller came by and was offered $680 for his Buffalo gold proofs, which I think he accepted from the dealer.

Then I stopped by a large display of ancients. Far out of my price range but seeing a Roman coin nearly the size of a half dollar was cool. Not much to say about that.

Finally I exited the main room after being disappointed. Really wanted a cheap, low MS Peace dollar but found nothing. Most of the low grade MS coins were just nasty. I'd have a hard time calling them AU overall, they were that bad. Nearly bought an 1884-O MS62PL in an old green PCI holder. $31 wasn't bad but I was short on cash so I passed.

As soon as I left the main room my grandpa found me and pointed me to a table. The dealer had a bunch of foreign mint/proof sets at 50% off. That's where I got my Cyprus UNC and Nepal proof sets. There were a few others of interest but the coins were rather ugly in the toning or just a bad design. This was the last place I visited.

Overall the show was VERY crowded and busy. Shoulder to shoulder the entire time. Tons of gold and Morgans (big surprise?) with a few places with high grade IHC. There were a few well over $1,000 but boy were they beautiful. One dealer even had a few stacks of proof WLH's. The 20th Anniversary ASE sets were going for ~$275-$300, with graded sets going for much more. PCGS PR69 RP - $210, PR69 DCAM $150, MS69 $90. Lots of those there. One dealer probably had 20+ sets of the graded coins.

Not a bad show. I'll be back in November for that one. First time my dad or grandpa has actually out spent me at a coin show too! But I'm really happy with what I got.

    Enjoy!

  • I also attended the show today from about 2:30 to 4:30. The room smelled a bit ripe (Burks was not kidding), but coins were plentiful. After I did the ol' "Circumference then up the middle" walk around the floor, I was drawn back to Bob from "Pocket Change." He had two cases of BU coins (strickly PCGS) ranging from IHCs to Peace Dollars. Most of his silver was blast white with a few lovely toners here and there. The first time I sat at his table, I was drawn to his MS64 1923 Peace dollars. Boy were these white and dripping with luster. I gave them a brief looksy after he removed them from the case for me. When I came back a second time, I noticed a rainbow toned 1945-S 5c piece. I was on the fence for about 5 minutes, but eventually snagged it.

With about a third of my budget left, I met Lloyd of Carat Coin. He has a wide variety of raw coins in all grades. After about a half hour of picking & choosing, I settled on four lovely wheat cents for my Dansco includind a 43-S which was so lustrous that it could have been gem silver and a 1938-P in RB with beautiful oranges, purples, and reds.

I enjoyed myself thoroughly and look forward to November. I'll try to have photos up at some point too.

    I have a quick question.

Out in the hallway there was a dealer in the corner who had a WILD toned ASE in PCGS plastic. Next to it in the same case was a nicely toned Morgan in PCGS plastic as well. Does anyone remember the grade/date of it? That thing was stunning! I swear I've seen something similar posted here.

Maybe in November I'll get a chance to meet some of you or at the CSNS.

  • Burks, I think the SAE was a 1986 and the Morgan was an 1880-S. They were stunners.
  • Great reports. My dad had an accident at work this morning so we will not be making it to the show tomorrow image

Heck yeah they were. That SAE was just.....wow! Really some nice toned Morgans all over the show. I kind of purposely overheard a dealer and someone else discussing AT'd Morgans he had. Dealer willingly told the guy "these coins are artificially toned using chemicals". Kind of a neat way to learn, seeing AT'd stuff first hand.

Sorry to hear about your dad's accident speety. image

Burks, thanks for the concern. He does a lot of roof inspections (for hail damage) and was getting off the roof when the ladder slid out from under him. Luckily he got away with just an ankle injury and should be fine in a couple of days.

  • A little late, but I was just thinking today:

Speaking of toned morgans...did anyone see the one guy with a series of raw toners? I inspected one of his crescent toners, and the reverse was PVC City! He wanted a $100! I kept walking.

I remember seeing a table with lots of crescent toners. Of course there were too many people around to get a really good look at them.
