Supposed Matte Proof SLQ on eBay

Link to coin
I can't believe people are believing this. By the bids, it looks like they are. Opinions?

No SLQs have ever been certified as sandblast proofs, although some insist that they exist for 1917. There is no known documentation for any "proof" SLQ except some of the 1916 patterns.

good return policy, no restocking fee, photo looks mildly intriguing

i've seen people take way crazier swings than this one....

In JH Cline's book, he says they do exist, and shows a pic as well as a signed letter from Walter Breen who verfies it as a proof as well.

Who would buy ANY raw matt proof coin off eBay? No one in their right mind.

  • It's "topline".........again. Check out the "MS66 Red" 1900 Indian Head Cent he sold on 2-16 for $124.40 He made that look "pebbly" too.

Quite frankly, i'd sooner buy a raw coin from this guy with his return policy than a top three tpg coin from a seller with a restocking fee...

He might grade ambitiously, but at least there's little downside risk.

    but hey, that's just me
  • Check out his "MS-64/65 Red" 1911S Lincoln.

YIKES! that 11-S is sick! How about this 1914 Lincoln. This seller is terrible.

  • He's playing games with the hue, the grain, the moire, and who knows what else.
  • Here's his 1865 "MS-64 Red" Indian. This is as much as I was able to restore the "enhanced" image. Notice how he uses the same denim background, and yet, it changes dramatically from coin to coin, obverse to reverse. The pic of this coin had been altered enough to turn the blue denim to solid black.

"My friend," I ain't nobody's "pray," lawful or otherwise.

All I'm saying is with coins in sgs, nnc, acg, ntc, oh yeah, my favorite "CSI" freakin slabs with either no return policy or egregious restocking fees for these "professionally graded coins," i'll exercise my own judgment of the quality of the coin AND the chances that if it's a dog i'll get my money back and deal with smoeone like this ten times more frequently than one who won't stand behind their POSs.

I meant to mention that i noticed this listing earlier in the evening while prowling ebay and didn't even bother opening it up to look at it BECAUSE it wasn't in a RESPECTED third party slab, but hey, that's just me as well.........

I agree wtih Zenny. If the coin turns out to be "worth" the $800 and it grades out as such why not take a shot? It's pretty obvious this is probably not a matte proof but who cares if you like the coin?

I should point out however given this issue is rather common you probably could find plenty of these around in slabs that are just as nice. But since this seller isn't charging restocking and allows returns I don't see the harm.

New seller, boatloads of raw coins, juiced images. Doesn't really take much thought to make a decision about this one.
