It is, as you probably guessed, Chinese. Specifically, it's a "milled cash", a hybrid design - an old-style "cast cash" design, struck on a "modern" western coining press. Kwangtung was one of the few provinces to make such coins, but they're still relatively common - listed in Krause (19th century) as KM/Y# 189 for 45¢ in VF.
Though the coin is undated, Krause gives an issue date of 1889. There is a scarcer variation (KM/Y# 189.1), where the top character on the obverse (left side of your picture) has a different shape.
