Ironic counterfeits

Well
today I had a look in a coin shop and did not find much of interest to my main collection.

Not wanting to have wasted the visit I picked up some odd (poor) British coins - mainly counterfeits.
From left to right.

1) A 1901 1/2 d holed and the reverse engraved 'BECK'
2) George III 1/2 crown, even silver plated this one would struggle to fool anyone.
3) 1773 farthing, contemporary counterfeit - very light/thin.
4) 1746 farthing, contemporary cast counterfeit.
5) 2 pounds George IIII, hey perhaps it's genuine!
6) One pound coin 1995 Welsh Dragon, counterfeit.

Two points.

A) Can anyone on this forum see a holed Vic. 1901 and not think of Lord M.?

B) The last coin was not a purchase, it was the first coin out of my pocket to pay for the others!
I said oops this ones not right - he agreed, and said "I'm not having that!" He saw the irony.
Worst part of that forgery is the "football" above the dragons head. Welsh dragons don't play soccer,
they play rugby!.

  • I had a similar encounter with a pound coin today also. I pulled the change from my pocket to pay for some postage and thought, that pound's not quite right. I didn't recognise the reverse, not that I'm particularly familier with them but this one looked too different. I at first thought it was a fake but not a very good one as the milling had 3 or 4 gaps with smooth areas in between. On closer inspection it turned out to be a Gibralter pound. Oh well I guess I have to spend it sometime.
  • Economic times must be getting hard in blighty when it is worth counterfeiting pound coins!

Believe it or not, there are a whole lot of counterfeit pound coins circulating every day in the UK. I'd bet if you've handled 50 or more of them, that one or more were fake. I'm fairly sure that I ended up with some the last time I visited the UK.

I thought of myself right away. image

Love it!!! image (Mostly for the engraving, though the hole and the 1901 date fit it into both of my collecting niches- how strange!)

    PS- cool stuff, there!

And I for one am not surprised at all to see a counterfeit modern pound coin- I imagine they are quite worth the counterfeiters' time and effort!
