XF45 since there doesn't appear to be much luster even though there is AU details. I may bump my grade up with a different or better pic.

XF45 obverse, XF40 reverse so XF40 for an overall grade. Nice original coin.

Here are the answers to the quiz:

    1. 48
    2. 40
    3. 50
    4. 40

The fact that 291fifth came to the same conclusion as PCGS tells us a little bit about the state of grading at PCGS as of right now. image

Oh Snap! I was close... looks like you caught PCGS on an off day. Not sure trying for another shot for an XF-45 or even AU-50 grade at PCGS would be worth the time/money, but I'd give that coin, based on my knowledge of the date & mint:

    XF-40 ~ 10% chance
    XF-45 ~ 80% chance
    AU-50 ~ 10% chance

    Another option....
AU-55 ~ 35% if you resubmit to NGC, after having it NCS'd, but I would have to protest this option, as you'd be ruining a perfectly nice, original coin.

For comparison, this coin looks like an accurately graded XF-40 (IMO):

I think that there is considerable difference between the two, and to answer PerryHall's question, there is some luster in the protected areas of the 43-O:

  • Nice coin, Dr.

Is there any luster under the protected areas?

Based on detail, wear, and color, XF-40 is conservative. Dealers would jump all over that coin in a PCGS XF-40 holder. Put that in an auction, you would have some dealers think they could upgrade it to XF-45, others to AU-50, and still others to AU-50+ (If luster is visible). There would definately be a battle.

On a side note, if it was recently graded, I'm not surprised at such a conservative grade. Word has it that dealers who are major submitters are getting creamed at the moment, and Longbeach was supposedly a bloodbath for crackout specialists.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Agree there's considerable difference between the '49-D and the '43-O. However, I would've guessed that 1849-D to be a VF-30, not enough detail for me to call it an XF. The 15 points difference is substantial enough, (I would venture that 43-O would grade XF-45 8 tries out of 10).... judging by the pics.
