That's a HUGE stunner. He was my favorite from those teams, right along with Bird. That's a huge loss....
  • I'll never forget the gamewinner DJ hit against the Lakers in the 85 Finals . . Boy was i pissed

Huge loss . . 52 is way too young

I think i'll give my dad a call tonight . . never know how long loved ones will be with us

Wow, the passing of DJ is incredibly sad.

The crazy thing is, just the other night, on TNT's halftime or postgame show, Charles Barkley joked that DJ was dead when making a joke during one of the highlights. I forget the specifics, but I think they were talking about point guards when Charles made the remark. I remember it because you just don't hear Dennis Johnson's name much anymore and I was wondering what he was up to.

    Just weird.

This is a downright shame. He was so damn young. It's also ironic for me in that back 1978, in my very first pack of Basketball cards I've ever bought, this was one of the cards in that pack.

    (pic borrowed from ebay)

I clearly remember pulling this card and putting it aside. It was the ONLY pack of Basketball cards I bought that year 'cause the Celtics were so bad in their pre-Bird years.
  • Did he die in Vegas this weekend??????

The photography on that card is amazing. You can actually make out with quite a bit of clarity the people in the stadium.

  • He collapsed on the sideline at the end of a developmental league practice he was coaching. He coached an NBDL league team. I remember his great facial expressions pointed toward the refs when a call did not go his way! What a glare he had. A solid player and seemed to be a great guy.

Arthur, Your right those Star cards are terrific. That particular scan came out like crap. It looks like it's all miscut but it's actually centered perfectly with 4 sharp corners.

It's ashame PSA dosen't grade those because i have the whole set in binders and all would grade at least a 9 with a bunch of tens

    RIP GURU
  • He was not just a solid player. He was one of the best two-way players of his era; a five-time all-star and finals MVP. He had a rep. as a high-maintenance guy before he came to the Celts but proved to be perfect fit on those great teams. RIP.
  • Very sad indeed. I feel that he was kind of gyped when he was not elected to the basketball HOF before Joe Dumars (Last year I Think). Dont get me wrong I beieve that Joe should be in there but DJ did what he was known for 10 yrs before Joe. What he did was Play lock down defense within the team concept, while scoring on the offense 14.1 career and when the Playoffs started he took his overall game to another level and was cool as ice in the clutch (As was Dumars)as a integral part of two different teams (Seattle/Boston) to win the NBA championship. As Larry Bird said he never had a better teammate than Dennis Johnson. RIP DJ

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Great guy, good player, good coach. Life is short dudes. Think about it.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • Very underrated player. Intense. Always gave 100%. I would love to have him on any team.
Sobering to think that an athlete of his dedication can die so young.

    RIP - DJ.
