2006 Gold Buffalo Population Update

BECOKABECOKA Posts: 16,961 ✭✭✭
I remember at the beginning there were threads keeping track and 70's were a large percentage of the population. Well here are the latest numbers for anyone interested.

MS:
Non FS Population: 4714
Number of 70's: 345 or 7% of the total
First Strike Population: 52,627
Number of 70's: 3275 or 6% of the total

PR:
Non FS Population: 7160
Number of 70's: 1425 or 20%
First Strike Populations: 1835
Number of 70's: 268 or 15%

Now that is a lot of MS slabbed $50 gold coins and the 70 population seems pretty reasonable.

Edited: For those of you that have held this coin in hand and compared it to the Eagle, do you think this is a far superior coin? I love the deep recesses that make it look like a high relief. To me there is no comparison and I don't even like looking at the older $50 eagle especially side by side.

The 70's can be purchased in bulk from Tulving.

Just checked the Tulving site for the first time. Seems pretty confusing and ton's of big lettering that makes it difficult to find anything.

They only have MS and not PR. The FS PR70 Buffalo's seem difficult to find.

Don't the graded proof numbers seem a bit low considering the mintage?

I really like the looks of the 2006 Gold Proof Buffalo, the mint did a great job on the devices.

I read that the mint has sold out of the 2006 MS Gold Buffalos, but they still have some proofs left.

Yeah they do seem a little low. This is however only one of many grading companies and most sold probably will not get graded as these come in a very nice case from the mint.

These were also a little expensive when they came out compared to the bullion price and with the MS coin looking so good my guess is that many people chose to go the investment route and get a decent discount.

Still the same coin in any holder. You just might get a few more deals on proof in the non PCGS holders.

I would love to own this coin in a reverse proof.

  • As much as I like the buffalo I would like to see the mint change the design in 2008 and every year after. A Wheat penny, a Flying Eagle or any number of older coins would make for a great collection of $50 pieces.

I completely agree. I wish they would have done that this year and they have the power to do so unlike the eagle program. Maybe after we get our fractional buffalo's?
