News about the Washington Dollar Errors, More "No Edge Lettering" reported

Just received this from Numismatic News, another Washington "No Edge Lettering" discovered;

Last week the new George Washington dollar was released to circulation. This week come the first reports of errors. Topping the list was a report of one of the new dollars without the edge lettering. On a regular coin, the edge carries the date, mintmark, "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum." An Arizona collector, who wishes to remain anonymous, reported it. He truly has a "Godless" dollar coin. Other reports of errors are coming in. What is not an error is the changing direction of the edge lettering. On some coins the tops of the letters are close to the obverse. On others they are close to the reverse. This is normal. It is not an error.

    With 300 million of these suckers being made, I'd expect to see quite a few of the "godless" errors. They'll be interesting, but not particularly rare.

    It's part of the Godless coinspiracy. With all of the edge issues we've seen here alone, next they'll tell us that the edge lettering is too difficult and do away with it altogether. Everything is going according to plan image

    So that means 4 per citizen per year. That is a lot considering the majority of the citizens will never handle these.

    If one roll has 8, how many other rolls will have 32% missing? I think $400 will be high end for these. I predict the 8 don't cross $250 each. (They are in the $50 and below range now)

    Both mints.

    The 1st one on ebay came from a D roll, on the link Russ posted that guy said he got them from a P roll.

    What would happen if someone that sent in rolls to PCGS unopened had some error coins? would they call that person up?

    also would it have been wiser for the guy with 8 to slowly release them? not list all 8 at one time?

    The guy wuth two got them from D mint stock. The guy with 8 says the others were P mint.

    This make me think these will not be rare.

    From other posters experiences with different coins they will not call and those would come back ungraded.

    the problem though with that is all are being graded, ones that do not meet a certain grade are getting a BU slab.

    Are you sure they are going to give problem coins the BU status?

    I guess if they do then they should all have the edge view. Then whoever has these graded will have proof it is a D or P mint then just send the slab back under error or variety review to get the proper designation.

    Now why would a error coin become a problem coin? Is any double die a problem coin? Is a no "S" a problem coin or just an error...It should and will grade in the future IMO if they aren't already.

    Really by your defination any coin in the Bust or any other series with die cracks shouldn't grade MS.

    Actually, the opposite. Notice that he ran three day auctions. He knows that a truckload more are going to show up on eBay any time, so he's moving them out as fast as possible.

    Not sure but there were a couple of posts where someone submitted a coin for grading and it got returned because it was an error. The main issue of the threads is why didn't PCGS call him to get the correct service on the coin.

    What the collector does not realize ..is that this is a Highly Organized Conspiracy of the US mint to get the collectors to get Rolls and Rolls of dollar coins from banks throught the country and check them for errors and release the rest into circulation...!!

    Same feeling. Opened three rolls and nothing but a bunch of bag marks. I will keep looking. Ompa loompa.

    I doubt these will be like the Wisconsin Leaf, but there could be some upside if the Mint comes out and says they fixed the problem.

    I can't imagine the Mint will continue making these errors, not only for Washington, but for the whole series. So at some point it has to stop and a statement will be issued.

    Now are they worth $600. I doubt it, but there's some value here.

    Bochiman if the letter is missing from the edge of the coin and the mint mark should have been on the edge, how will anyone know that it was to be a "D" and worth much more then the "P".image

    Desperation is starting with the sellers now. 2 coin s listed as a buy it now. 1 for $250 1 for $299

    I doubt the errors will reach $225 again, w/o being slabbed. Maybe I am wrong, but there is gonna be alot of these, I think.

    These may have another source of value. From one sellers pictures, these look much better than others I've seen. Maybe skipping the run through the edge lettering machine saves a bunch of surface marks and results in higher grade coins. Trouble is they will not be identifyable as P or D.

    Therefore... they Registry Sets will now need to include P, D, and Blank MM coins!

    I've been a coin collector for 25 years now. These new Presidential dollars are worth just ONE dollar to me. I will probably buy a nice PR69DCAM from a PCGS dealer when the proofs come out, but I believe that anyone paying more than face value for these coins in this start-up period is just plain stupid. The reason is I believe the buyer is NOT at all interested in collecting the coin. He is interested in trying to then sell it for more than he bought it for. Only the uniformed will get suckered that way. There will be thousands of these plain edge GW coins out there soon. So what? The collector is interested in the coins that do HAVE the edge writing, not the ones that don't. Oh well, make your money while you can. JMHO. Steveimage
