My second CBHDime and more questions

Ok, so I just got back from the coin shop with my second half dime this week. This one is a better VF 1835 LM-3. So my first two coins are both pretty easy die varieties to come by and if things go smoothly, I should have another common die variety soon.
When attributing your coins do you guys typically take notes, draw pictures, or just look for the obvious? Do you usually study the coin or just print a couple good photos to mark them up and use for your notes? I’m thinking of doing the photo thing myself. My local coin dealer says that the “half-dime geeks on here will need a microscope after looking at those little coins for so long”. So if I do the picture thing, can I attribute it just as well, and then confirm on the coin or what?
Rob
I believe I need to take a few pics to show my entire CBH.10 collection.
I also believe it wasn’t me calling anybody a “half-dime geek”.
And I lastly believe some of you might see this question asked again.

we learn to excuse a lot with Brad, we understand that he is "special"
Each person attributes in his or her own way. I prefer to attribute the reverse first, then the obverse. After more study, you will likely identify that certain die marriages have key "pick-up points." Once you become familiar with these, you will be able to more readily attribute the coins. Not all pick-up points will be found in the LM book...experience, intuition, and study will provide you with more insight on these. Practice attribution on ebay. The pictures are usually bad and too small, so the challenge is sufficient to make you better at it once you have a coin in hand.
Some collectors make extensive notes about each coin in their collection. Some make very few notes or none at all. It is all up to you and your preference and available energy & time.
As for attribution...
If I'm at home with my baby busty I'll typically view it under a loupe quickly for some pick up points to get an idea of what I'm looking at/looking for. Then it's camera time. Snap a couple digitals and up on the screen they go. The book comes out and I'm attributin'
After the I'm sure of the attribution I usually get the coin in hand and put the loupe to it again and study the heck out of it cause I'm a half dime geek
I do take notes about anything significant to the coin. Also anything that the coin features (cracks, fills, etc...) that is not mentioned in the LM book. These notes, and other misc. info like E/W diameter-N/S diameter-reed count-weight-grade-etc..., all get written down on the Kraft envelope that the coin goes in.
