MANTLE AUTO - Assign grade or just get authenticated?

Some of you know that I have this 1964 Topps Giants Mickey Mantle autographed in blue Sharpie. It is headed to PSA today or tomorrow. I was wondering what your opinion was about whether or not I should have a grade assigned or just get it authenticated. What grade would it have to be to "hurt" the value? Would a PSA 6 "hurt" it? Would a PSA 5 "hurt" it? There are no creases or wrinkles, so basically, it's a matter of corner wear. Here it is - grade assigned or no?

Generally speaking on a card like this - what is the threshold for a grade "hurting" the value?

IMO - if the card isn't gonna get a 9 - authenticate only.

    This isn't a 9.

Are you sure it's not a 9? image

OK, so your saying that even on a vintage autographed card, if it doesn't get a 9, don't have it graded? So, an 8 would even hurt it?

the grade is not where the value is.....just authenticate

  • Frank,

I would just authenticate the autograph. The card grade appears to be a 6 . JMO.

I wouldn't mind having that card in my display case. Very nice.

I would have graded it if the card had potential to be 9 but it doesn't.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I think I will just authenticate. However, I just now found this. I know mine wouldn't get an 8, but look at this. I don't think mine will bring even close to that kind of money, and I think mine has a bolder, brighter autograph, don't y'all? Thoughts?

  • I am not sure if an autograph would help any card's value unless it was a rare card and a rare autograph. this is a high pop card, even in a 9, and the autograph is not rare either. In this case, the card is a piece of cardboard with the Mick's auto and there are literally hundreds of Mantle Giants out there with grades higher than PSA 7.

  • on a topps giant Mantle I think the min. grade you want is a 7 to have the card graded. if it was a regular issue vintage Mantle then the grade could be lower and still add value. being the giant cards go for much less money don't grade unless it's a 7 or higher.
  • grade or no grade on the card I think you are looking at $300-350 on the high side for your Mickey

Personally, I think a numeric grade on the card helps a sale. I could care less about an autograph grade,as I really cannot see a difference between an 8 or 10 auto. Cards are different, and if I were in the market for a 64 Giants Mantle auto, I would bid on the one with a card grade over the one without.

BTW, I am a Jimmy Spence fan so I would send it to SGC actually.

I agree. Actually, some buyers are nuts. Looks like it worked out pretty well for the seller.

  • I estimated that price because I bought a 64' signed Mick for about $225 and sold for $285 or so. mine was a ball point sig so I figure the sharpie would go for more $. this was a few months back.

Authenticate only. The value is in the sig, not the card.

Shouldn't signed cards with numerical grades get an MK qualifier?

PSA makes a special distinction for autos - e.g.

Again, it's my opinion - that unless the card is gonna get a 9, it may detract from the sig - and as many have said - it's the auto they're buying and not the grade on the card - unless it's a PSA 9 Clemente auto RC or something like that - then I think a "premium" will apply? But in the case of this card - the guy has a BIN of 1400$! And an opening of 1200$!!! That's too much premium - especially with a signer whose auto is sloppy - just call him JO MO!

    Just my take.

I'd go with the "Authenticate" route on it. There are a lot of 64 Mantle autographed cards out there , and buyers may pass over a PSA/DNA 6 (or less) while buying the same card if it's just "Authentic".

It's on it's way to PSA. Authentic request only. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I have already gotten a quick opinion from PSA/DNA, and they said, "Likely Genuine".

  • an authentic only 64' giant mick psa/dna went for $334 tonight. your sig looks a little stronger but very comparable items.
