How did this coin make it into a slab?

1838-C $2.50

Can someone help me out here? How did this coin get into a top tier slab with all those marks or planchet flaws? The obverse looks worse but the reverse has numerous ticks or marks. How did this coin not make it into an altered surfaces "holder"?

"We notice a mark in the field near star 2."

No kidding.....

We noticed that the Grand Canyon almost swallowed star #2... Reverse loooks like the Lunar surface...

I agree to a certain extent. But this one seems like a stretch to me. Let's just say I've seen nicer coins bagged for much less.

I expected to see worse, before I clicked the link.

But yeah, that's pretty severe. I am sure they didn't have the heart to BB it.

Kinda like King Farouk's 1933 Double Eagle getting an MS65, despite Liberty's skinned knee, now that I think of it.

    Altered surfaces? IMO doesn't apply.

Beat up yes but still worthy of a slab IMO.

Generally, if a mark, even as deep as that one is, appears to have been made unintentionally (i.e. random deep scuff, lamination, or ding [or two], such as on the reverse), the top tier companies will still grade/slab better-date gold. If the mark looks intentional, such as the one in this photo (i.e. like someone took a nail, dug it in, then raked it a millimeter or two), they usually will bodybag the coin. I don't know what this TPG was thinking here when it was graded... it's obvious intentional post production damage to me. Should've been BB'd. At least, this does present an opportunity for someone to pick up a relatively well-preserved example at a "discount", but I couldn't see any serious collector of Charlotte gold wanting a coin like this.

I could see any given dealer, should the 'lucky' buyer decide to sell in the future, tell that individual that they (the dealer) aren't interested in it because a coin with that kind of damage would be very difficult for them to sell.

That coin is damaged. If it was in some other slab, you guys would be jumping all over that other grading company. PCGS blew it on this coin.

PCGS is somewhat lenient in encapsulating cleaned/damaged/altered better date gold coins. That coin would likely be BBed at NGC.

Reverse loooks like the Lunar surface...

The reverse does not bother me much. The planchets for some of these coins are rather crummy.
