ok if push comes to shove which is a must keep?

OK there are some money struggles coming up with my wife having surgery. So I may be forced to sell a coin or a set of coins to make it thru. But the question is I don't want to sell either, but which would be the bigger mistake if I MUST sell.

Options are either my 2006 w PCGS $100 Platinum ms70 uncirc or my 2006 20th anniversary 1st Strike ms70, rev proof 70, pr69dcam gold set?

If you were forced to sell, which one would you choose? Which do you think would be the better keep?

I hope it does not come to this, but it looks as though it might.

  • Would'nt the 20th Anniversary set fetch you more in the long run. Not sure what paltinum goes for an ounce. But I have seen the sets go for quite a bit on ebay.

I say keep the platinum. I think it'll be among the lowest mintages for some time to come.

Hard to say. both of these are good keepers. Platinum remains somewhat undiscovered and has a lot of potential there if it were to heat up. Gold has the bigger collector base and would be more of a conservative position. Best of luck, Jerry

The platinum would take less storage space but it maybe better just to sell them all to get into a liquid position.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your wife.

There's a little trick you can do to help relieve your anxiety and potential remorse when faced with a choice like this. I'm not kidding try this... base the decision on a flip of a coin. It has a way of removing you a little from the process. If in the long run it works out good you'll think.... man was I lucky. If it works out bad.... man was I unlucky.

I would sell any or all of my coins and other possessions if it made a difference in my wife or my kids health, with not so much as a backward glance.

That being said, I would choose the coin or coins that would generate the amount of money closest to exactly what you need.

I hope that your wife has a very successful operation and a speedy recovery.

we'll pray for your wife. As far as the coins go, these are just modern glorified bullion. with that being said, they can both be obtained very easily again once your financially able. why not just flip a coin, and send one packing?

  • I like this thought. You would be doing what you have to do. And you would be taking the decision out of your hands. I have done this for other decisions in the past. Things that would bother me but were not as important as your decision for your wifes benefit. It takes you and emotion completely out of the equation.
I'll tell you what to do.
    Go that way.

  • Greetings,
I pray your wife has a speedy recovery. If it was me and roles reversed. I would sell wife and keep coins.

Keep the gold. 10,000 sets sold out in a day. There are an enormous amount of collectors of Eagles out there, and the reverse proof is stunning. On the other hand, platinum does not share the same fan base. Nobody really wanted the platinum uncirculated coins until they couldnt buy them from the mint anymore. They found out how "rare" they are, but the true mintage is unknown. I pose this question to the forum. Is a coin really "rare" if there are 3,000 pristine examples out there to be spread among a few hundred die hards. Let's call it like it is: these are bullion coins with a "w" mintmark. I believe that once again hype has created a demand, and when that demand trails off people will see that for $9,000 they could buy a key date like the 1916 SLQ in XF or the 1893-S Morgan for that matter. I would dump the platinum while it is at the zenith of its intrigue.
Take care of your family, and I wish you all the luck in the world.

  • keep the platinum and sell the gold... you get good premiums for first strike stuff right now that probably will probably not be there as much in the future... I believe that first strike and regular issue coins will eventually start coming closer together in price. close call either way.
  • My best wishes to your and your wife in this unpleasant situation. Just a third opinion here- PCGS offers loans on certified coins. Is it possible to take care of necessary medical expenses and not have to part with either of your coins on a permanent basis?

These are discs of valuable metal, and can be replaced exactly as they are. Sell them both. When you (and your wifeimage) get back on your feet, you can always replace them. We wish your wife the speediest recoveryimage

It's a tough choice. Keep your coins as long as possible.
Maybe use them as colateral on a loan.
Hope it all works out well for You and Wife.

Thanks for all the well wishes. Surgery went well. image

The question is not if I should sell, but if I have to which do you think would be the bigger mistake / regret later. Would the ultra low mintage ms70 w plat or the low mintage / higher collector base gold set be more likely to appreciate to a higher level in the future?

Either way if it has got to sell, don't blink it's gone. I am just trying to look into that crystal ball, and go dang I sold the wrong one.

Thanks, to you and all who have given well wishes.

I sat and thought about this last night, after the kids went to bed, and my partner was not here with me. I would gladly sell all of my coins for her, and as a matter of fact, if you give me your addresses I will steal yours and sell them also. image
