Why did this half sell for so much???? 1853-O

LINKY

Maybe I'm missing something. I thought I bid fair and it sold almost double???? Have these gone up that much?

The coin has EF/AU detail. For a $100 a VF would be a good deal.
But you can't tell anything about the surfaces, cleaning, marks, etc.
The buyer could have gotten a rip. Unless badly cleaned, which I don't think it is, $100 was probably a good deal considering a 53-0 half in XF/AU is many times scarcer than the 53 Philly.

The weak LIBERTY may make this coin look like an F-12 coin, but overall it has considerably better than F-12 details, particularly on the reverse. Seeing as this went for close to VF-20 money, it seems about right.

The coin might be in an ANACS net-graded holder as "Cleaned" and the reason I write this is that the coin is obviously in an ANACS holder yet the seller does not mention it anywhere in the auction.

It's definately in an ANACS holder, probably net graded for cleaned.I wondered why he didn't mention a grade.
