This is just sick...is it Kool-Aid or "rarity"?

I don't understand the magic behind a PCGS AU-58 grade. Even the inflated PCGS Price Guide for this coin at the MS-60 level is just $375. Someone help me to understand the madness with this ebay auction, please: 1837 H10C PCGS AU-58

I love a nice 58, regardless of plastic, and that's where I've traditionally focused my type set efforts.

Having said that I've mostly stopped that because the money is just getting too damn stupid for the nice 58s worth having (and worthy of the technical definition of the grade). I may liquidate and try something like XF-45s instead.

How long have you had the bst post for a mint state 1837? This might be a close as some people can get? Oh and flectcher might think that this has original skin.

Common die marriage, life dipped away, negative score in the eye appeal department, PGGS AU58 That coin has nothing going for it except the plastic. This is what I'm referring to when you hear me say "Magic 58". I predicted the hammer would be $400+ on this bad girl and it's already there. Where it ends up I've no idea.

In general, a nice AU58 bust coin commands more money than MS60 price guides. Of course, in general, any nice bust coin goes for much more than price guides anyway!

This is true of most classic coins, except for condition rarities like 1884-S, 1901-P and 1896-O Morgans, and early branch mint gold.

You're right TDN but honestly, would you put that half dime in the "nice bust coin" category?

it is, no doubt, but as Kim Possible pointed out in another thread, it's no longer the "value grade" it used to be in most cases.

Competition drives prices up on ebay, out of sight in some cases. This coin has one big thing going for it: it is the one and only PCGS certified capped bust half dime for sale on ebay right now, of any date or grade (excluding ebay stores, where the few PCGS coins offered for sale are very overpriced). Every person who wants a PCGS AU58 capped bust H10c for "type" purposes took a look at it, and that is a lot of people, given the popularity of AU58 coins and anything PCGS certified. None of those "type" collectors care if it is a common die marriage. If you want to make $$$$ selling coins on ebay, follow this auction as a model.

The coin has definitely been dipped but I don't think the life has been dipped away.

I think the top pics are just poor quality straight on images.

If you look at the bottom pic it appears to have quite a bit of luster left.

    60 bid...$290.00
    63 bid...$700.00

    Little larger spread there.

AU58 is to a peasant what an MS70 is to a prince.

The kool-aid just tastes great no matter what yard you're standing in when you drink it image

Not upgrading yet. I'm actually hoping to not have to upgrade anything...but then again I hope to win the lottery someday too.

I believe I have already made arrangements for number 2 (from coins+) and 3 (from LM), neither of which is an upgrade...am I moving to fast???

I don't think it's sick, it's just that AU-58 coins are in high demand. Even Fletcher is buying them, and he used to just be a Morgan dollar collector.

At least I was able to pick up a few nice ones before it got too crazy. I can't compete in that space any more.

Seems like every time I decide on a collecting interest, demand suddenly soars for that interest. If I went into two-cent pieces, three-cent nickels or classic commems and they suddenly got hot, I'd KNOW it was my magic.
  • Would you rather buy a sweet AU58 that lights up when you look at it...or pay MORE for an ugly MS61/62 in your favorite coin? Just to say it's MS???
  • coinpicturescoinpictures Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭
90% of AU58s are more attractive than MS60-62 pieces. In many cases a 58 is a 63-64 with a rub...

    S'why I love 58s... image

not moving too fast at all as long as you are picking out original coins in a grade that should have lasting satisfaction for you.

Too dippy white for my tastes, but some folks like that sort of thing in an early 19th century piece... image
