I like them close-ups. This is the latest close-up I've done. I actually just bought this camera 2 weeks ago and am trying to perfect it. Takes a while tho'.
I'm using Photoshop Elements for post-picture processing.
My setup is incredibly simple. Two desk lights sitting on top of cardboard boxes (that the lights came in) and pointed straight down on the coin. I've got a simple 1 ft. tripod holding the camera.

Photoshop is really cool. Nice cameras come with some good programs as well. As far as cameras, just buy an SLR with a nice macro lens and you are there. I like both Nikon and Canon. I wasted money on some smaller cameras. That said, you can take some really great images from most any camera if you have the time to learn it.
I have a 1ft tripod also. I use the standard lens. I have a wide angle macro but really haven't found the need to use it for close-ups. I'm using Adobe photoshop 5.0. Doesn't crop exactly like others but does the job. I use a small clamp on flourscent lamp to give light towards the coin but far enough away to avoid glare and use the exposure setting for the rest of the lighting needed to bring out the coin.

You can get a cheap one that works great for coins...about $90. Ask Russ what series.
As for programs...I use Photoshop and it works.
I use a NIkon coolpix 4200 but its outdated by now I'm sure.
