Collecting Modern Commems?

Just curious how serious people are when collecting this series.

Do most just order from the mint and accept what they get or do you hunt for better examples?

I am asking because I never really took the time to notice a difference between two MS69 Commems. Same design.

I recently went through 100 of the James Town Silver MS Commems and found that there was a huge difference in strike and luster between the worst and the best. Such a huge difference that when side by side one looks dramatically better than the other.

This has changed my view on modern coins and now it is finally a challenge to get the best eye appeal rather than just blindly getting the next coin in the series.

What are your thoughts?

Edited: I just started this series last year with the Benjamin Franklin and already less than one year later without buying the previous years I am up to 12 coins. It seems that after awhile it would be hard to store all of these.

  • I collect Modern Commemoratives as well and find it very interesting and relatively inexpensivve. I hunt auctions, ebay, I even found a decent one at a flea market. I have 14 commems at PCGS right now being graded.

I've collected the modern commemoratives for years. The quality generally has improved quite a bit since the earlier issues. However, I am really quite shocked at times with how many distracting points can be found on the coins--even on those graded 69.

I returned more on the SF commem series than on all the others combined--especially when I received the gold ones popped out of their capsules!
    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!
  • I too have been collecting Comm's. Both from the mint and Ebay.
I also sent back twice the SFO coins. Got mad and asked for refund finally.
I then found the coin I wanted on the Bay and bought it PCGS or NGC 69. I found with all the costs involved (shipping back and forth and grading fees) that saved me money and I got a better grade coin than from the mint. Sets of cource are a bit different. But all in all I have a great many comm's and didn't spend a fortune to get them.
