For the Jefferson Nickel guys...is there a 1999-P Double die?

found a 1999-P just now that has what i believe to be nice doubling on all the outer devices on BOTH sides. The most noticeable on the obverse is "GOD" "TRUST" and the mint mark. On the reverse the most noticeable is E PLURIBUS UNUM and AMERICA, but like i said just about every outer device on both sides has doubling. I know about machine doubling, ejection doubling and all that but this is true doubling i think. I suck at taking pictures of brown copper so i dont think im gonn be able to take any pics of shiny clad, i will try but i was just wondering if anyone has heard or seen anything like this

No known (to me, anyway, and I tend to know about these things image ) DDO or DDR for the 1999-P nickels. Jeffies are prone to something called die deterioration doubling, which is caused by repeated metal flow over older, worn dies. It will look like raised shadows next to the letters, and will be in random directions, sometimes even on both sides of a letter. Die deterioration doubling also will not show notching on the serifs of the letters typical of a true doubled die.

I will be interested to know if these deterioration-doubled coins attract any variety interest over time, because they are basically identical -- that is, the die pair in question can produce numerous coins, hundreds or thousands, with identical features. I bet some of the varieties so produced will come to matter down the road, as some of them are very bold.

I have a couple with doubling around the date. It looks as if it is die fatigue? I don't really know. Maybe machine doubling, This is with the ( P ) mint mark.

  • None verified for the 1999-P. All that I have examined have been die deterioration (die fatigue) or mechanical doubling damage.

There is no reference to doubling in the QDB Nickel book. The coin is listed as "common" (well over a billion minted), and they frequently come with 5 and 6 full steps.

  • well i guess the consensus is die deterioration, and im guessing that they hold no kind of premium even though all outer devices on both the obverse and reverse are doubled?
  • " ... even though all outer devices on both the obverse and reverse are doubled?"

I'm not saying it is or not without at least seeing some pics. However, your statement is a red flag for die deterioration.
