OT - Why would you take a dog to climb a mountain?

I am not a climber, but taking a dog on a mountain trek seems very odd.

This is in relation to the story about the hikers and their dog trapped 8300 feet up on Mount Hood.

Well, you gotta eat something if you ever snowbound. Er, Donner party anyone?

Years ago , someone took a cow to the top of Matterhorn. Mt Hood is normally not that hard of a climb. This time of year is a different matter. I've climbed many mountains and have seen quite a few small dogs even up on the high ones. details may come out later that may really answer your question of why.

I get Mt. Hood as a view from my office window everyday. There are still two dead guys that are pretty much frosted over for the winter. Yet these idiotic climbers keep going up. Oregon tax payers have shelled out thousands of dollars to rescue these people. Survivors need to be fined enough money that they will think twice about doing it again. Actually if you are camping and/or hiking in decent weather (summer) and you've got an active dog they love that stuff! Pry better than staying at the kennel!

    Quoting the AP News report:

Rescuers using an electronic locating device found the three climbers and their black Labrador, Velvet, on Monday morning in the White River Canyon, where they had holed up overnight at about 7,400 feet, officials said. The crew hiked with them down the east flank of the 11,239-foot mountain; on the way down, the climbers got into a tracked snow vehicle that took them to the ambulance.

"The dog probably saved their lives" by lying across them during the cold night, said Erik Brom, a member of the Portland Mountain Rescue team. He described the wind in the canyon as "hellacious."

If you do something stupid scuba diving and end up in a barometric chamber you have to pay for it- I was on a boat with someone that had to refi their house for the 15K it cost. Diving insurance costs under $100 a year and I won't go any deeper than my bathtub without it.
But if you're hiking up a mountain in the middle of winter and don't look at a weather map or aren't fully prepared or trained we all get to pay for it. BS! The same people doing this crap are the same ones complaining about taxes being too high. Require evac insurance before they get a climbing permit, and make the ones that don't pay for the rescue.

Absolutely! I am tired of hearing about people like this, and all the effort and money that gets spent on having to save them from themselves. Most of the time, the climbers are folks with more money than common sense, so if and when they are brought back down, they should be made to pay a large sum of money which would be used to help fund rescue efforts for people who are in real, actual emergencies that are not of their own choosing.

As soon as Anthony realizes that it's the granola crowd that does stupid stuff on mountains (because Gaia isn't really as friendly as they thought), he'll become a conservative. image BTW, Los Angeles has 2 equivalents of this - the people who decide to drive around the MTA light rail gates to beat the train and save a minute, and the people who decide to swim across the LA River channels when it has been raining hard rather than staying up top and walking the few blocks to find a street that has an overpass. The surfers who go out in rough seas don't give the taxpayers a big problem this way. No one misses them enough to call for help. image

Never going to happen! I like people of other cultures too much and aren't greedy enough with possessions.

Ever see a surfer rescue a lifeguard? I have, on a couple of occassions. Paddle thru 15' shorebreak when the water is barely 50 degrees and you can survive anything!
