"Question for seller"

I received a question from a potential bidder this morning on one of my auctions. The guy wants to know if I would ship the card to Australia.

My question for you ebay vets, is it too much a hassle to ship across the globe? Its only a psa 10 1994 Griffey Jr, not like its a Mantle or something. I just was wondering if there is too much involved for too little a return?

I did look at the usps website and found some funny stuff regarding prohibited items that cannot be shipped to Australia;

Fruit cartons (used or new)..........................................................Not that there is anything wrong with that

Goods bearing the name "Anzac."

Goods produced wholly or partly in prisons or by convict labor....... Isnt this how all the Upper Deck cards are manufactured?

Perishable infectious biological substances.

Radioactive materials.................................................................. Darn! Im fresh out of Uranium

Registered philatelic articles with fictitious addresses.

Seditious literature...........................................................................image

Silencers for firearms...............................................................In Australia all firearm murders are just done in public for all to see

Used bedding.

Comments

  • I would only ship it if he paid with a money order.

No seller's protection when using PP.

Other then that... shipping is really easy.

I always give them the option of Global Priority Mail.

No used bedding???? What about used undergarments? Seems certain things are missing from this list.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

  • I agree with the others Matt.
    Money orders only for overseas.
From my personal experience; I was taken for over $200 shipping
to Germany, so I no longer ship outside of North America. Tracking
overseas is not the same as most countries don't even scan their
    packages.

I would politely turn him down, Just too much to worry about. With no way to properly track the package.

  • Matt -

Agreed that money order is the way to go on payment. I have had some success in making auctions available for overseas buyers. One, a 1/10 2004 Fleer National Pastimes Auto of an Asian pitcher went for over $200. Probably would not have sold for nearly that much here. Wasn't even a rookie. This guy was in the league for many years. Sent it to Japan. Sold a few others to Australia and Korea.

Give them two shipping choices - Air Mail or Global Priority. Check the prices on usps.com.

I stopped doing it because the risk is not acceptable with PayPal.

    Existing international-buyers can use PP or whatever they wish;
I just do not want any new international-folks from EBAY.

I charge $20 for Express Mail to AU; that includes tracking and
$100 insurance. The buyer signs on receipt. A customs form also
    has to be filled out.

I think PP still does not offer SP to AU. (Canada, UK, and USA, are
still the only SP spots, I think.)

In the instant case, I would prolly sell the card; trouble would be cheap,
and you might get a new customer to deal with off-EBAY. (I would
    insist on using Express Mail).

Matt, I shipped once to the land down over. I sent a graded coin and got it back due to the law about shipping coins into their country. It was a hassle and would've been worth it if the deal were completed. If its a large $ deal, I 'd strongly suggest money order , otherwise you might be able to develope a loyal customer base there and move some small ticket items. That's my 1/4 cent worth.

SAGE ADVICE above. I do not have the option of shipping outside of the US on my auctions. If someone outside the US ever contacts me about shipping to their country, I always reply that I'd be happy to as long as they use a GREEN (USA) Postal Money Order.

With PayPal, you have ZERO protection.
  • I've sold and shipped to Aussie and numerous other countries without any problems (but I primarily deal with the under $20 stuff). The biggest hassel for me shipping int'l is physically presenting the mailers at the post office counter during business hours. This can be a challenge for someone working the graveyard. I doubt someone would stiff you for a common Griffey card even if it is slabbed with a 10 but you never know for sure. I suspect with eBay's goofy rules you arn't allowed to limit payment type to int'l money order if you also accept Payal. The venue would rather pocket that 5%. For what it's worth, my stuff gets to Australia faster than it gets to Canada.

I assume you're sure this is a real buyer and not one of those spoof emails asking about "your item"? I've gotten a few of these and before replying at all, just double check that it is indeed a real potential customer on the other end.

I ship to Australia all the time and have never had a problem. I take PayPal too.

As a previous poster said, the only hassle is having to physically go to the counter. Some tips to help speed the process would be to ship in a bubble mailer, use a printed address in all block letters (Arial is best) using Word or similar word processing program and use the post office meter stamp rather than regular stamps.

When you fill out the customs slip (small green one if under 4 lbs) be sure to mark as a gift and contents as either Trading Card(s) or Photograph.

I cant help as I have never shipped overseas ebay items. I have however, gotten many things from overseas off ebay. I would try my best to complete this deal. Check his feedback to see if he has a history of buying from US sellers.

Also, make sure to include custom paperwork. You can always put down that it is a gift and there is no duty. But failure to put anything down could slow up delivery.

    The shipper is not held liable for lying on the customs forms;
    the addressee is.

If the item is opened - and there is a sales receipt inside - the
recipient is liable for the standard duty, plus any penalty the
customs people are allowed/mandated to add.

It is ALWAYS a mistake to lie on your customs forms. If buyers
in socialist countries are too cheap to pay for the benefits they
receive thereby, it is not my problem.

Don't put a sales receipt inside if you're calling it a gift.

Western Union Money Transfer is also safe for sellers.

I've shipped to Australia several times, but I hate it. Make sure you charge enough for shipping because it costs a fortune. I always got paid via Paypal and never had a problem. Just filling out the paperwork is the pain. I still accept Aussie buyers, I just dread the extra legwork. (I'm lazy)
