Any boxing guys on these boards?

I've started picking up some vintage boxing stuff - cards & paper, and I would like some resources. Here is a sample - National Police Gazette supplement of Jack Johnson, June 25, 1910 :

Thanks,
John

Still, the greatest fight I've ever seen has got to be Hagler vs Hearns, man what a battle.

I've got a 48 Leaf set, short about a half dozen cards, as well as T218 set and a few T220s.
Here's a card from my V137 Willards Chocolate set, which incidentally shows all the heavyweight champions up to Dempsey, with the shameful exception of Jack Johnson:
Here's my 10 card W515 boxing subset:
I also have a few Arab Turkish Cigarettes cards:
I also need #9 to complete my Famous Knock-Outs set by "The Rocket" (British, around 1923). I just posted my 1956 Gum Inc. Adventure Boxing set - all cards were my own submissions.
Adam's reference is a must - you can pick it up on ebay.
"All evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
I just bought a Ringside set from Goodwin. I also picked up a lot (600+) of lower grade ringside for trade and play.
I am also in the process of ordering the Warshaw Encyc.
Does anyone know the relative scarcity of Factory 30 vs. Factory 649 for the Mecca and Hassan backs on T218?

I haven't received the set yet - Got in Goodwin's 2/15/07 auction. Looks exmt-ish, so I'll have to see if I send any in.

If you want to buy any supplements let me know as I have quite a few from the early 20th century "Boxing" magazine (around 1908-1911). They are nice and colorful.
By the way, here are some of my recent pick ups:
A british version of the N174 series and from what I believe only recently discovered. One was offered for sale publically for the first time last year.

Welcome to boxing cards Wondo. Boxing cards are essentially all I collect. The most popular sets are the 1910 T218, the T220, the T9, 1938 Churchman Boxing Personalities, 1938 Cartledge Famous Razor Blades, 1948 Leaf, 1951 Topps Rongside and 1956 Adventure Gum. I'm not really working on a particular set right now, I'm mainly focused on my Jack Dempsey Master set. I also enjoy collecting some of the more obscure cards and/or singles of boxing HOFers when the price is right.
Sorry for the brief message but when my entire multiple page response got erased it kind of took the wind out of my sails. Here are some of my favorite aquisitions I've made since I started collecting boxing cards 6 months ago.
1936 Mitchell & Sons "A Gallery of 1935" Joe Louis (2nd year)
1928 Churchman "Men of the Moment in Sport" Jack Dempsey
1921 W551 Hand Cut uncut strip w/ Jack Dempsey & Georges Carpentier
1901 Ogden's Tabs Jem Jeffires (HOF)
1935 JA Pattreioux "Sporting Events & Stars" Joe Louis RC
1935 JA Pattreioux "Sporting Events & Stars" James Braddock RC
1922 The Champion Jack Dempsey

Talking about the Jack Dempsey master set you are putting together, have you seen the checklist on the website ?
http://www.boxingcarddigest.com/dempseycards.html
If you can add any more cards to my checklist, let me know.
Thanks for the great pics and advice. I have picked up a lot of T218 in vg-ex condition with the Johnsons, as well as a 56Adventure Louis in PSA8!
I also put up my first ebay boxing lots that have scrapbook damage
Is the SMR realistice for PSA pricing? I got the Louis, which is a solid 8, for just over half of the guide. Just wanted to know if that is an aberation or consistant. Anyway, thanks for all the help.

Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

BCD,
I guess it depends on how broad your definition gets and whether you want variations. Your checklist is pretty extensive and includes many cards the PSA set registry does not. The vast majority of my Dempseys (which haven't been graded yet) that are of the more obscure issues are at my homme in Massachusetts. But, from where I see it as a collector there are the following cards you could add (I'll provide scans if I have them). I'm not sure any of this will be useful but feel free to use any scans or info for your website.
1919-1920 (?) Underwood & Underwood
I only learned about this card through Adam Warshaw's website. It's large, like a post card, but is blank backed. Other than having the blank back, what separates these from a post card is the design and the fact that there is also a known example of Jess Willard from this issue. While I'm sure there will be debate as to whether this should be considered a card, per se, I do. They're pretty rare and I haven't come across one is very good condition but I think it's importany because of it's issue date, which Mr. Warshaw places between 1919 and 1920, preceeding most -- if not all -- of Dempsey's other issues.
Front:
Back:
1953 Knorr Tunney vs. Dempsey (#13)
These were German chocolate cards inserted into packages of candy. There are other cards in the set featuring boxers (I own 2 copies of the Joe Louis card). The cards are on thin paper stock, almost paper thin, with a very glossy finish. Scan unavailable at the moment.
1950s (?) Boxing News (#9)
I don't know much about this card. Someone popped up on ebay selling off the entire set of 108 cards stating they were issued in packs of 6 in the 1950s. It's post card sized and plain backed. The seller was from the UK so they may be a Brittish issue. Any info on this would be appreciated.
2005 Helmar Brewing
These cards were issued as some sort of promotion with scratch-off circles on the back and instructions to visit their website if to claim the prize. The set includes many athletes from many sports and features the art work of the owner of the Helmar Brewing Co. The paper stock is very thick, almost like a modern GU insert and the back edges are very prone to chipping.
Front:
Back:
1953 A & J Donaldson Ltd. Sport Favorites
I know very little about this issue but they seem to be pretty rare. Many other boxers are included in the set. San unavailable at the moment.
1923 W515-1 Hand cut (strip card)
1920 W529 Hand cut (strip card)
1920 W529 Hand cut Reverse Image (strip card) There are many, many variations on the W529 cards with multiple combinations of the numbering, font and image flipping/cropping.
Variations:
I've seen the '22 Comic Life Dempsey that's been cut and separated from the McKinlay. PSA grades these so they must have been intended to be cut up. I've also acquired many other cards from that set that were cut into singles. Again, I don't know how extensive you want to get with the variations. The 1926 Spalding Champions comes with two different backs, one w/ ad and one without.
Like I said, I just started about 4months ago on the Dempseys so I'm still very much in the learning phase. Any info you could pass along to me would be appreciated. Out of curiosity, did you get the 1931 Churchman Cigs. issue from the PSA player set checklist? I've since had that removed from the checklist as it was a typo/mixup with the '38 Churchmans. If I'm wrong and there actually is a Churchman Cigs. issue from 1931 please pass along any and all info you've come across because I've never seen this set or heard of anyone having any card from it.
Thanks and eagerly awaiting the inclusion of the 1920s to your CARDS section of the website. That's my favorite decade.

Hey John,
Like most other sports, the SMR is usually over or under for different issues. Here is what I've noticed in my searchings.
T218, T220 --- Dramatically under. Current SMR listing are at a fraction of what I've seen some auctions go.
'38 Churchman/'38 Cartledge --- These used to be way over but I've really noticed an increase in price in both the graded copies and the raw. While they're still not selling quite at what the SMR has they are moving their way closer.
1956 Adventure --- WAY Over. These cards consistently sell for a fraction of what the SMR has.
Hope this helps.

This is true for the lower grades, but for PSA 8+ Churchman commons are going for double SMR and most star cards about 25-50% higher the last 3 or 4 months. I really follow the 1938 Churchman and am trying to upgrade my set so I'm writing this with a bit of frustration
