I have always been a baseball only collector, yet lately I've been thinking about starting a Topps f

Of course, this is only AFTER I finish up all my baseball card projects in my signature, but for some reason, I have been looking at the Topps football sets and I think they look kinda interesting! image Of course, I'm ONLY going to do the Topps sets, no others. I guess like in my Topps baseball set run, I can start with 1981-95ish or so (my current Topps BB run is actually 1978-2004 though).

Now here's the skinny. There are TONS of Ebay auctions like these (even more so for Update/Traded sets) that will get you started on collecting Topps baseball sets:

Topps set "starter run" 1987-92
Donruss set "starter run"

But you just don't see them for football sets, you know?

Anyway, here's my questions for all you veteran FB collectors:

1. In what years did Topps make football factory sets?
2. Most importantly, can anyone here make a list of Beckett hi book values for all Topps regular football sets (and number of cards in each set)? A sample scan of the front and back of at least the 1980s sets would be most helpful.
3. In what years did Topps make those glossy 1000 yard club sets? Were they included in the factory sets or do you have to buy those seperately? Were there other glossy sets made like those?

Okay, let Topps football 101 begin. I promise I'll be a good student. image

  • I believe the 1000 yard club sets were in the 85 and 86 sets - not sure if many/ any 80s set were factory set issues or not though. I recently sold several 80's sets of mine. Think I have another 83 and 88 if interested. Other than 81 and 84 set you should be able to get any of them in NRMT or better for less than $50 each. Not exactly in depth knowledge here but might be a help.

Personally, I am a big 70s FB fan and have registry sets of 68,69 and 71 FB

Well, whenever I am ready to get started (which is probably still several months away), I'll probably start with the sets at BBCE because he has nearly all of them from the 1980s/early 1990s and most of you seem to think quite highly of BBCE, plus I'll save on shipping and get more consistent quality in the sets.

Does anyone here have a copy of say, last years or the year before of the annual Beckett Football guide (or almanac if they make one for football) that they no longer need because they now have the current issue? That might help me learn more about football cards. image

To answer your question regarding football set lots, you see them from time to time. Of course there are not as many as baseball, but if you look hard enough they are out there.

The 1000 yard club set went through at least 1995. I am not a big football card collector, but I remember seeing cards from that year.

Regarding the book value, like people stated in your other post, look them up on ebay. It is more accurate than the Beckett hi book.
