Planning NY vacation - any travel package recommendations?

I am starting to plan for a New York vacation and was wondering if anyone can recommend any vacation packages with a baseball emphasis? My main goal is to see a game at Yankee Stadium and take one of the tours. I know the tours are only available on certain dates. Next on my list would be Cooperstown and possibly Shea stadium. I was wondering if there are any travel agencies or packages that cover these areas as a travel package.

Thanks

Edited to add: Something like this which I just found: Generations Touring Company (Click on Itineraries then Baseball Sacred Grounds)

For the Yankee stadium tour I would strongly recommend you go during an off day. That will allow you to visit the clubhouse along with the regular stops such as dugout, on field, press box, and monument park.

There are no all inclusive tours that I know of but if your dates are flexible you could try and be around the city when the Mets are in town and Yankees are away. That way you can hit a game at Shea, tour Yankee stadium, then take the trip up to Cooperstown and stay a couple of days there before heading back when the Yankees are in town for a game.

Also, from the Yankees web site I was able to pull the following, a list of dates where the clubhouse portion of the tour will NOT be available.

    4/16-19, 4/25-30, 5/4-5/10, 5/18-5/276/8-6/18, 6/29-7/11, 7/16-7/22, 7/30-8/5, 8/13-8/19, 8/28-9/6, 9/17-9/21.

Are you flying to NY ? Renting a car when you are here ? Relying on other means of transportation ?

  • I would be flying to New York (from California).

I am very familiar with LA traffic and would imagine that NY traffic would be just as bad, probably worst. I have no problem renting a car which would probably be necessary if I piece together the vacation on my own.

  • We're trying to do this exact vacation this year - from California to Cooperstown/NYC - so I'd be interested to hear some opinions on this as well. We're planning on going during induction weekend. I reserved our hotel back in August and the closest we could get to Cooperstown for induction weekend is Albany image

I certainly wouldn't rent a car for getting yourself around NYC........use the various public transportations. ......Driving in NYC is one thing; hard to find and expensive parking is the other.

Cooperstown is great, do your research. Usually lots of autograph opportunities. Find a nice bed and breakfast kind of place and reserve it early.

Ok, it looks like I will be going the week of July 27th to August 3rd.

Here are my question for the New Yorkers on this board:
    - It looks like I can take a tour of Yankee Stadium before the White Sox come to town. I know they have three different tours (Classic, Champions, and Champions Plus). I would like to make the most of it and therefore take the Champions Plus tour but it is only available to groups of 12-50. Any ideas/suggestions on how to get on that tour since it only only me 2 in my "party"?

    - Where is the best place to get the best seats for a Yankee game? I am willing to pay $$$$ for great seats.

Give them a call at the stadium and ask if they know a way to get hooked up in a group for the Champions plus tour. Other than that Im not sure if there is another way besides maybe just showing up that day and trying your luck with another group that has been booked already.

As for tix, depending on what you are willing to spend I have a few connections here I can get in touch with. PM me and we can talk more.

History wise, I love the basic tourist stuff. Statue of Liberty, Trinity church (near old WTC), weehaken NJ is where alexander hamilton was killed by Aaron Burr, New York library has the largest original Gilbert stuart painting collection, MOMA.

all fun. you cant help but have fun.

  • I lived in NYC/State for 35 years. And I just got back from NYC visiting family. The trip from NYC to Cooperstown is a long one. About 5 hours. The rough part is once you are off the Thruway it is still a nice drive (single lane roads) into the heart of NY state.

Yankee and Shea are not too far from each other. If you are staying in NYC just jump on the 4 train and that will take you to Yankee. As for Shea, well I lived a few blocks from it so we always took our bikes...

By car using the northern state (Shea) you can cross the Triburough Bridge and go to the bronx, Yankee stadium is Exit 4 of the Deegan. Stay away from rush hour. always plan to get there early!

I recently got back from my first trip to NYC.

I would only rent a car for the portion of the trip to Cooperstown. You can take public transportation EVERYWHERE in NYC.

It's simple and quick.... And that's coming from a southerner, where NONE of our cities have decent public transportation.

Driving around looked like a nightmare.

It's a vacation. Skip the headaches.

I echo the above about rental cars. I grew up in LA, drove the 10 and 405 daily, etc... and though I was able to navigate NYC the one time I had a car there it's a pain to park, expensive, etc... plus cabbies know short cuts you don't know. Get the rental car for the c'town portion. In fact, C'town is in a very pretty area. Nice drive up there. I would keep going and go to Fenway while you are back east! Have fun!
