Kung Hei Fat Choi

In honor of the Chinese New Lunar Year of the Pig: "Kung hei fat choi", which loosely translates to "Congratulations and be prosperous". Often mistakenly assumed to be synonymous with "Happy new year".

Undated, proof China 1 troy ounce gold Vault Protector coin (currently, the only 1 troy ounce gold vault protector coin minted by China Mint). Mintage 1,000. In ancient times, the Chinese emperors kept these vault protector coins to bring them good luck/fortune and to protect their treasures.

Here is some more info on Vault Protectors

Following an ancient custom, the Chinese place a special coin close to their valuables to protect them from thieves and natural disasters. These “vault protectors” are used to safeguard jewelry, coins, paper money, and valuable documents, and are also thought to ward off all kinds of evil spirits.

For centuries, there has been a vault-protector shrine in the national treasury of China. Inside the shrine hangs a large, specially-minted coin, draped with a tasseled band of red silk. These coins were never issued for general circulation, but in 1982, the People’s Republic of China began minting a small number of legal tender coins with the same design as the large protective coins enshrined in their own vaults. This series is very popular in China, and these Scarce pieces are now attracting considerable interest from collectors around the world.

That's neat trozau. Although I'm not a big fan of NCLTs, this one has attracted my attention. Doesn't it come in smaller and cheaper sizes?

    DesertRat,

I actually have one of those 5 ounce silver Vault Protector featured in your link and it did not cost me that much! image

    Dimitri,

I have seen about 4 or 5 different 1/10 oz gold vault protector issues from the China Mint over the years and about 2 or 3 different > 4 oz gold vault protector issues. They have also issued a few 1 oz silver vault protectors and > 4 oz. There are some listed on eBay right now but from China sellers. Every now and then some come up from local sellers. Prices are not that bad. image
