Selling CDs on eBay...Any tips?

I just had to go get my entire collection of CDs out of my old bedroom at my parents house. My sister is having a baby in less than a month, so for some reason my folks are turning my old bedroom into the nursery.

Anywho...

I have about 300 CDs that I have stored on my hard drive as well as backed up in 3 different drives(I really don't want to lose the music I paid for). So I honestly have no use for the actual CDs, cases and jackets. None of them are in MINT condition, but I would average them out to being NM for the entire collection.

How do you think I should go about eBaying these? The few large collections I saw didn't go for a lot of $$, but the collections by artist or genre with 8-10 discs seemed to do a lot better.

Anyone have any advice or past history?

It is HARD to maximize revenues in this category.

Absent something "rare," big collections are
not sought after ----- unless they are cheap.

Lots of folks are used to buying CDs at garage sales
for a buck or less. But, if you can build some related
groups of discs - say 12 or so - $25 to $50 is not out
    of the question.

As you know, listing carp is a bunch of work. If you
could find somebody locally looking for a collection,
    you might do better.

Also, Amazon is reportedly doing really strong biz
in CDs since all of the EBAY sellers moved there.
There is MUCH less competition in the category
on EBAY than there was a year ago - fee hikes -,
but the big sellers took lots of the buyers over to
    the river.

Agree with Storm. I've bought 2 collections at about .50 per cd, definitely not lucrative for the seller - and I believe it was because the collections were all over the road. Grouping them with an attainable buy-it-now at $2 or $2.50 per disc is your best bet. Stress that they are originals and not burned/ripped. Hype the price of iTunes vs owning the whole shooting match.

FWIW, I'd take all Clash/Cure/REM/Smiths type stuff if ineterested.

I always sell my CDs and DVDs through Half.com for a set price rather than nothing per CD on eBay.

But, it all depends on how much time you have to get rid of the stuff.

  • I've actually just got done selling off my collection on Ebay. The wife got me an Ipod for Christmas so I ripped everything I wanted to my computer. Most of my stuff was clean so I did my best to let people know if anything had any light surface marks. Also guaranteed anything that did have a mark or two would play like new of I would refund their winning bid(not shipping). Started everything at 99 cents with $3.00 shipping for the first cd and a $1.00 for each additional in the US and Canada. As far as what you will get it just is all over the map. I also thought of doing one big lot as well but in the long run it was worth it to list them seperately.

    Good Luck!

I sold off my collection last year and did really well, Make sure that you list condition very accurately. I had someone return a lot to me because I described them as in Excellent condition. Which they were for used cd's, This women was wanting new cd's straight from the package evidently.
Like someone said before put them into different Genre's, and make sure you charge enough for shipping.
    Good Luck !

  • zef,

If they are in good shape, save yourself a lot of time by visiting one of the many resale shops in Chicagoland that specialize in selling used CDs, DVDs, etc. You will save yourself a lot of time....but will have to sacrifice a little $$$$.

Good taste. Not meaning to hijack this thread, but if you don't have Sirius I recommend getting it just for channel 22. Right up your alley.

You don't get much for CDs on eBay unless they are fairly rare or out of print. If you have to get rid of them I think a better option is to trade them to a store that specializes in selling used CDs. In my area of Northern California there is a great bookstore that gives generous store credit for trade ins. Nationally there is a chain called Half Priced Books that might have a store in your area. Really cheap on trades but they take a lot of stuff.

I've dealt with Second Spin where they actually have buy prices listed on their web site. Couldn't be any easier, you just tell them what you have and as long as the CDs are complete and not scratched they take everything. Your only cost is shipping (CD in case costs $1.35/63 cents without.

My new favorite resource however is SwapACD a trading site where you list what you have to trade and can request CDs from other members. Totally free and you can move credits between this site and PaperBack Swap their sister book trading site. If anyone joins let me refer you so I can get referral credit.

Of course this may not work if you are in a hurry to sell them.

Craigslist best and fastest way to get rid of them if your local Craigslist gets a lot of traffic.

    Good luck, hope this helps.

Donate them. You'll be doing something nice, and that's a whole lot more valuable than making a couple bucks.

  • Nice idea about donating the CDs (for a tax deduction I presume). What would be the going rate for general cds?

  • Zef,

I use half.com --- works great... but will take longer than the ebay route.

PM me --- I may be interested in a few of them image

I actually sold off about 35 cd's last year to fund a Guitar purchase. My first CD I sold was a rare out of print Trouble sefl titled album and it sold over $80. Once I got rid of all my rarities and "good stuff" alot of stuff went unsold. I sold about 50% of what I put on. I too was using the 0.99 route with 2.50 shipping. I did however make enought between the CD's and old magic cards to buy a Malcolm Young signature Gretsch.
