How "Re-saleable" is a low grade vintage complete set?

To preface, for me, a lot of the fun of our hobby is the challenge of collecting the set, and usually, once I have a complete set, I'm off to the next one.

There are very few cards (<100) in my personal collection, and I like it that way. I do have thousands of cards and 20 or so sets in various states of completion that I collect because I enjoy the collecting aspect.

That being said, if I were to complete a prewar set in say PSA 3-5, would it be easy to sell and move on to my next project? Is there much of a market for complete vintage sets in low grade? I know a lot of people talk about "investment grade" cards being PSA 8 (sometimes 7 depending), but I'm not looking for an investment, I'm looking to recoup most of my cost then move on to another project. Is getting back my costs a realistic goal?

For most pre-WWII sets, PSA 3-5 is not low-grade; it's mid-grade. If you're talking about any popular set (Goudey, most tobacco or older caramel sets), it's very saleable.

  • thanks, I'm just finishing up my 1927 Churchman Golf (not upgrading) and 1938 Churchman Boxing (still upgrading some singles though)

I was looking to do a baseball set, Diamond Stars, Goudey, Playball, something like that. Thanks, seems like I won't lose my shirt. Appreciate the feedback.
