Charles Barkley is a funny guy...

I don't enjoy most of the FB guys that are on the pre and post game, so its refreshing to me to see Barkley on the NBA on TNT.

The dude is a riot. And I love that commercial with DWade - "Is this your dad?"

Good stuff.

That commercial is also a "guide" for collecting. Wade is HOT right now but Barkley is a well know legend. I remember back in .....I think it was 1999 or '95 Steve Avery or Maddux (sp?) anyway his card was going for like $45+ and he was the hot new rookie, everyone wanted him. Now I am lucky I'd get $5.00 for him, sure he made quite a few good plays and such but that doesn't make a legend.

Barkley's the best. Telling it like it is and not afraid of offending anyone. I like it when he makes fun of that one older ref (can't think of his name now), saying he can beat him in a race.

Tom Tolbert was good too. Outspoken at times. Didn't he say something to offend someone and got a suspension from tnt broadcasts for awhile for it?

Chuckie's a good guy. Always tells you, flat out, what's on his mind.

My brother sat next to Barkley some years ago on a plane trip from Milwaukee to Phoenix. They started talking and cracking jokes. Free drinks of course in First Class so the jokes were flying. He introduced himself as just Charles and my brother knew who he was the whole trip but never lead on. When they were leaving the plane he shook hands and said "It was nice sitting next to a Hall of Famer." Barkley replied that it was nicer sitting next to someone who treated him as a person instead of an NBA player. Gave my brother a business card with Charles' private email address. They still trade email a couple of times a year and my brother refuses to give me the address.

    Cool story

As far as post game shows go, Barkley, Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and the TNT crew are the best in the business in my opinion. One of the reasons I catch their show as opposed to most of the NFL pre-game junk is the TNT crew is entertaining. Something ESPN's Countdown stopped being for me years ago.

I really like Sir Charles. The commercials he did for Right Guard (I think) back in the early 90's were really funny as well.
  • His golf swing is even better.

that old ref that he makes fun of is dick bavetta, and they are having a race tonight (I believe it's tonight) during the all star festivities. Barkley is going to get smoked.

    Here's a few more good ones;

<< <i>On Peter Vescey calling him fat on TV: "I told him I'm gaining weight and I can lose weight, but he's always going to be ugly. I am not going to jump him on TV because there'll be witnesses. If I beat him up, it's going to be in a dark alley somewhere. The truth is, I'm going to have to get bigger clothes or start hanging out with fat people to look skinnier >>

<< <i>"All I know is, as long as I led the Southeastern Conference in scoring, my grades would be fine." >>

<< <i>"I'm just what America needs - another unemployed black man." >>

<< <i>On the Enron scandal investigation: "Almost all those politicians took money from Enron, and there they are holding hearings. That's like O.J. Simpson getting in the Rae Carruth jury pool." >>

    This guy is quoting machine!

That's right, Dick Bavetta. I gotta catch that tonight.

All of Barkley's lines are instant classics.

    Great Barkley plane story too.

About 15 years ago when Paul Molitor was still with the Brewers, I was getting some physical therapy for my injured back at this clinic in Mequon, WI. Anyway, there's Paul Molitor working out not 20 feet from me. I guess he was trying to get stronger in the off season even though he was coming off a great previous season. I was introduced to him as 'Paul' as we shared the same therapist. I never let on I recognized him and I think he appreciated that. Even though I was dying to ask him for an autograph. It was great seeing him trying to improve himself at about 35 years old, and not just riding out his contract with mediocre numbers.
