I am not happy.....

The Irish International Coin Fair is on tomorrow and I spend the day in A&E.

Turns out I have Pneumonia and liquid between my rib nerves and my lung nerves which causes a nice little hurting sensation.

I was still thinking of heading up but both the wife and a Kildare dealer have kindly suggested that I stay home. image

Anyhow I am thinking of purchasing a proper camera with the money that I was going to spend on coins.

    Ooh...so you're going to get a Nikon D80 then.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Marcel, this can turn to a life threatening situation, take it VERY seriously.I've been there in 2001 and changed my whole lifestyle since, from eating to exercising, the only thing I haven't given up yet is smoking. I hope you get better soon.

Pneumonia sucks. I tried to go back to work too soon after my second bout and ended up out and miserable for another week. Listen to your wife! I hope you are feeling better soon!

You will get as many different camera recommendations as there are members here...

Do some searching, on the lightside as well as here. The camera itself appears to be far less an issue than the lighting and the skill of the photographer.

If you want the most flexibility for add-on lenses, you want to get an SLR. But be prepared to spend $700-1,500.

I'm using a $225 Olympus C-7070. Others here are using current and older generation Nikcon Coolpix cameras to great effect; those can be picked up used for $150-300.

If money is no object, get an SLR. I cannot recommend specific models, but some of the pros here can.

If money is a concern, I would spend $200-300 on the camera, then get a good quality copy stand and some decent lighting.

I would recommend spending some time at Imaging-Resource.com. It's my favorite digital camera web site; the reviews are VERY comprehensive and the sample images for each camera are very telling. Pay specific attention to the remarks and image quality in "macro mode", as that is what you will most likely be using for closeup work...

I actually use an older Canon G2 but had to buy an aftermarket macro lens in order to shoot my coins. The D80 is a high end digital SLR made for the common user that I desperately crave, but not as much as Wybrit's toned Maundy Set.image

Pneumonia? Been there, done that (again), this time last year.

    I feel your pain. image

I too mostly have myself to blame, for not kicking the nicotine habit.

It sounds serious, Marcel. Health first, coins - later. With good health - more coins in the longer run image
  • Thanks for your well wishes everyone. The coin show opens in 1/2 an hour and where am I...in front of my PC at home. image

Anyhow thanks for the camera talk and links as well. I have spend the last 1/2 hour reading about cameras etc.

Hence I will start up a camera thread.
