Not 1X, 2X or 3X SMR but 3.7X SMR!

A 1909 Ramly Cigarettes Walter Johnson PSA 4 sold for $14,202.14 tonight. SMR is $3,850.00. This works out to a tidy 3.7X SMR. Amazing. Does anyone have the POP on this card? Even more amazing is that the card appears overgraded at a PSA 4. I know there is a PSA 8 out there because the Top 200 Sportscards Card in the Hobby has a picture of a PSA 8. SMR for a PSA 8 is $40,000.00. But I could easily see that card topping $100,000.00 if it ever went on the block. Your thoughts?

    The "6" says "PSA 3-4." ?

    The "2" says "PSA 8."

I do not think SMR is much relevant on these cards.

  • I agree. SMR is almost completely worthless for vintage cards such as this one. It's a guide but a better guide would have been to look at VCP, for example. They listed a 5 from a recent Mastro Auction and I think, if you extrapolated the result of the PSA 5 sale, you could have figured out what a 4 might fetch based on the multiple.

SMR, especially with fluctuating/skyrocketing vintage prices, should be used as a guide rather than setting the market's price.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • SMR is meaningless concerning rare prewar. Can only imagine the resale in a year or two.

  • I paid $456 for a card that lists in SMR for .60 cents image

EDIT: That's about 760x SMR image
