Some new pics of old coins...

I haven't been able to take good pictures in a long time. It's getting frustrating! I'm going to start selling some things off, so I gave the photography thing another chance. Still not great--I can't get lustre to show, but I can get pretty good colors and details. I'll take that as a victory image

Well, since I haven't been able to post NEWPS as I get them, here's some catch up. These are all from my 1914 date set (not for sale!).

Spoon, those pics are quite good - you have them framed well (background), the colors look realistic and the details are great. Photography, particularly capturing luster, can be daunting. Try a "photographing coins" search on this forum or the US forum for old threads that address camera set-up, lighting, etc. image

Some of the images that appear dark only need a little "tweak" in Photoshop:

As far as capturing lustre, I've found that I simply CANNOT do it with the camera straight on to the coin. The camera has to be tilted slightly so the light reflects off the coin at an angle. I know it can be done properly with the right setup, but I've had no luck other than tilting the camera...

Eric- nice stuff! I particularly like the India 2-annas and the Dutch 5c piece.

I see you've changed your icon. I call that French 100-franc design you chose the "Ice Cream" obverse, since the flame on her torch is at such a weird angle... it always looked like she was eating an ice cream cone and then the wind blew the top off of it! image

It kinda started by coincidence. Back in Germany, I was looking for nice early 20th century pieces at a coin show. I found tons, and at the end of the day, I noticed they were all dated 1914! At the time I was collecting with a total lack of focus so I took that as a sign.

But I'm also fascinated by political and military history. I have mini-collections of WWII, the Franco-Prussian War, the revolutions of 1848, colonies in general, etc, etc. But World War I still fascinates me more than the others. In a way it was the signal transition point into the modern era. For the history, there's plenty in this period. For now I'm just doing a type set of coins, but already I find myself picking up WWI related medals, notgeld, POW money, books, maps, etc ad nauseam!

That and the beauty of the coins. This is a period of classic designs. They weren't yet into the art-deco swing, but were fully concsious of the symbolism of money. With nationalism in mind, they produced coins that emphasized the strength of their people. It is a neat time, and by choosing the first year of war, 1914, it allows me to do the type set I would otherwise be doing but with some measure of discipline. Holding out for a 1914 instead of taking the 1915 that's in front of me has helped give me patience in this hobby. Of course I still go nuts every now and then. image

    Well, you asked! imageimage
