Any nuclear bid experiences?

The fabled "nuclear" bid. Placing a bid so insanely huge to make sure that a bidding war won't steal your item, or to beat some other last minute snipe at a price that seems a little to high, but still guarantees you the item.

The thing about nuclear snipes, is that you never really know just how high the "nuclear" bid would go. Unless someone else comes in and puts in a competing huge bid. I know I've seen at least one "nuclear bid" linked on this board. (I want to say it was a PSA 10 Tim Raines rookie.)

Has anyone ever placed a nuclear bid, and dodged the bullet? Have you ever had to bite the bullet and have your bid maxed out?

The closest I've been was on a hard-to-find autograph card of a former Nebraska player. It ended up running me more than $30 (which was about $25 more than anyone else other than the second highest bidder would have paid for it), and while I was a little surprised, I wasn't shocked.

So any nuclear bid stories?
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

I bid $488 and some change once on an arnie herber autograph, it was $30 or so with a minute left. I had offered the seller $250 to end early. Ended up paying around $125.

A few days ago somebody linked a mays card that went for 510, underbid was 500, next highest was around 30. I think that's what you're talking about - somebody got burned.

About 3 months ago I placed a snipe at $8200. and got the card for $5200. I was pretty happy. The underbidder later posted it was one of a handful of cards he really regretted missing out on, and I'm sure had I not sniped it would've gone a whole lot higher.
I"ve placed really high bids in catalog auctions only to have them blown away, but have fortunately never had any serious remorse from a large bid.

I did a few times while chasing the 55 Clemente.

I would think this is the one, overpay up to $100 based on previous sales, and WHAM.

I had but in a snipe on a psa grade 8 "greatest moment " of about 3 times the market rate. At 5 seconds my bid went in at about $230 . 2 seconds later I was nuked. I wasn't mad but realized that someone wanted it worse than me. I've but high bids and won , but never put in an "insane , must have at any cost "bid . We have 5 sons and reality must be in the ball park as far as my bidding is concerned. But one day............

I think the fabled case of the 1993 Refractor 10 of Palmeiro had two bidders placing their "nuclear" bids which happened to be fairly close to each other. Dangerous game.

I bid this am and won on 4GB of flashcard memory

I must have had a brain cramp cause I didn't realize it was in HongKong and in GBP money

Anyway it was almost twice what I thought plus a $$ for shipping and ins came to $59
Still it is cheaper than what I have seen around but I really don't need 4GB but for the cheap price ( so I thought )
    I figured what the heck

I am really concerned about the time to come from Hong Kong

I immeadiately emailed the seller ( 15 minutes after I realized what happened )and asked to cancel and credit my PayPal account
    Haven't heard back yet

    Wonder what will happen

    Anybody have any expierence here
